Stevens opens with two wins on Sunday

The Stevens Ducks open up the season 2-0 for the fourth straight year. The Ducks have also swept CCNY on opening day for the second straight year. With the two victories, Stevens improves to 13-1 all-time against CCNY. The Ducks have won seven straight contests against the Beavers, dating back to the 2014 season.

Senior Christian Kreiser hit a home run in game one, while junior Eli Somers had two hits, two runs scored, and an RBI in game two, as the Stevens Institute of Technology beat The City College of New York 6-0 in game one and 10-1 in game two Saturday in a doubleheader at Dobbelaar Field. Stevens surrendered just seven hits to the Beavers across the two matches. Sophomore Erik Sibbach (1-0) and senior Jacob Buurman (1-0) each picked up their first victories of the season. Sibbach and sophomore William Sotiropoulos, the two starters for the Ducks, combined to throw 12 strikeouts.

Occidental is 3-2 in the early part of the season after
dropping a series to La Sierra. Occidental lost on
Saturday and split on Sunday. The Tigers opened their
season lasat weekend, sweeping Providence Christian.

Howard Payne won both games of the doubleheader versus Schreiner with HPU winning 6-4 and 14-6 on Sunday at Don Shepard Park. Brayden Ferrie (1-0) started on the mound in game one and picked up the win for Howard Payne. The righthander went six innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on seven hits, allowing one walk and striking out two. In addition to his three hits, Tanner Benson had an RBI to lead the Yellow Jackets. Grant Pfaff put together a standout effort as well, going 2-for-3 with a double and a walk. John Garza also contributed for Howard Payne, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding an RBI.

Brandon Taylor (1-0) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Howard Payne in ther nightcap. The righthander pitched 1.2 shutout innings while giving up one hit, allowing no walks and striking out one. Brendan Read also made an impact on the mound for the Yellow Jackets, throwing 2.2 innings, giving up one run on two hits, with no walks and one strikeout. In addition to his three hits, Derek Gifford had three RBI to lead the Yellow Jackets, along with Devon Smith's three base knocks. Tanner Benson also contributed for Howard Payne, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding a walk and two RBI.

The Occidental Tigers played host to La Sierra in a doubleheader on Sunday. La Sierra built a 6-3 lead after they added two in the eighth inning. The Tigers quickly got things started in the 8th inning when Sean Elsee led off with a single and Ben Rutkin drew a walk. After an Alex Henderson single loaded the bases, Mason Olson cleared them with a double to right field, tying the game at 6. After shutting La Sierra down in the top of the 9th, Lou Martineau led off with a walk and was advanced to 2nd base on a sacrifice bunt from Sean Elsee. Tommy Woods drew a walk and a wild pitch allowed both Martineau and Woods to advance into scoring position. Alex Henderson would step up to the plate and deliver the clutch walk-off single to right field that scored Martineau and gave Oxy a 7-6 win. Declan Sklut pitched a great game for the Tigers, throwing 5 innings and allowing 0 earned runs while striking out 6 batters. AJ Naha picked up the win after tossing a scoreless 1.2 innings of relief. The Tigers concluded their three game set with the Golden Eagles with a 7-8 loss.
