A wild Saturday

After a tough loss to the Fontbonne Griffins, Illinois Wesleyan bounced back with a 3-0 win over the Pioneers of UW-Platteville. The Titans push to 1-1 on the season and UW-Platteville takes a step back with a record of 0-2. The Titans are two games into its three game weekend.

No. 3 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace competed in day one of the Baltimore Invitational hosted by Johns Hopkins where it fell to Arcadia in extra innings by a score of 5-4 and upset No. 1 nationally ranked Johns Hopkins by a score of 5-1 on Babb Field inside Stromberg Stadium. BW (2-1) jumped out to an early lead over Arcadia (2-0) but the Knights would battle back to take a 4-2 advantage in the bottom of the seventh inning. A Yellow Jackets' two-run eighth tied things up to force extra innings where a BW wild pitch would seal the victory for Arcadia in the bottom of the tenth as Tommy Ajjan scored the game winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning. The Jackets bounced back with a big victory over Johns Hopkins (1-1) in a rematch of the 2023 Division III World Series Semifinals thanks to some big bats and dominant pitching.

Babson senior Brant Savage homered twice as part of a nine-run seventh inning but No. 22 Trinity (Texas) answered with a 10-run eighth and defeated the Beavers, 15-14, in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon. Trinity pulled even with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Beavers appeared to regain control of the game by erupting for nine runs in the top of the seventh. The Babson reliever quickly ran into trouble in the eighth as the first six batters reached base. Holloway got the rally started with an RBI double to center and Matthews' three-run shot to left got Trinity back within 14-9. Sophomore Zander Teator came on in relief and sandwiched a pair of strikeouts around an error but junior Brandon Nelson cut the Tigers' deficit to 14-11 with a two-out single through the right side and Christian Holloway followed a walk to senior Colt Harris with a grand slam to left field giving the hosts their first lead since the bottom of the first. Trajan Lee then closed the door on the Beavers in the ninth recording a pair of strikeouts to secure the improbable victory.

No. 22 Trinity (Texas) picked up a massive 15-14 come-from-behind victory in game two against Babson. The Tigers (2-0) pulled a rabbit out of their hats for some Trinity magic. The Tigers collected 14 total hits and capitalized on 3 Babson errors. Cristian Holloway led Trinity, going 2-2 and driving in five. Trajan Lee picked up the win on the hill, going 2 and a third and only giving up one earned. The last third of the game was electric. Babson scored nine runs in the top of the seventh to go up 14-5 and shut down Trinity in the bottom of the inning. Just when it all looked lost, Trajan Lee shut the door on Babson in the eighth, and the beast was awakened, scoriong ten to retake the lead with the big hit, a Holloway go-ahead grand slam BOMB and Trinity clawed their way back to go up 15-14 into the final inning. Lee came back in the top of the ninth and did the work himself. He struck out the first batter looking, got an assist for the next out, and then froze the next batter with a backdoor two-seam fastball and Trinity completed the historic comeback.

Trailing by three in the top of the eighth, No. 20 Christopher Newport rallied to tie on a three-run home run by Doc Daniels, but 10th-ranked Cortland (2-3) squeaked by the Captains (6-2) with a single run in the eighth to capture a 5-4 win at the D3 Showcase in Greensboro. Playing at First National Bank Field, home of the Greensboro Grasshoppers, the comeback was denied despite Daniels delivering his second three-run home run in as many days. Christopher Newport was charged with facing junior left-hander Luis Misla for the Red Dragons and the Cortland starter put together an exceptional outing in the neutral site contest. CNU mustered just two hits over the first 4.1 innings against Misla while the lefty struck out 11. Tied 4-4, the Red Dragons answered right back in the bottom of the eighth with a lead off single and a walk to the first two batters. After a fly ball out that moved the runner from second to third, a Jon Munoz single plated the game-winning run.Cortland escaped with a 5-4 10 inning win in their second game of the showcase. Cortland led 4-0 after six innings against the 2023 national champs, but the Hornets rallied for a run in the seventh and three runs, two unearned, to tie it in the eighth. In the bottom of the 10th, Mat Bruno led off with a single and went to second on a one-out passed ball. With two outs, pinch hitter Mieczkowski was intentionally walked. Bruno and Mieczkowski executed a double steal to put runners on second and third, and a wild pitch during ball four to Zachary Kringdon sent home Bruno with the game-winning run.

Head coach Ray Hedrick tied Hugh Stephens for the program record for career wins with 459 as Randolph-Macon edged Wilmington 4-3 on Saturday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets would add to their lead in the seventh for a 4-1 advantage. WC plated two in the eighth but came up one run short. Senior Wyatt Stanley earned the win in relief, going 4.0 innings with three hits, one earned run, two walks and six punchouts to even his record at 1-1. Junior Sam Slevin struck out three in a scoreless ninth to record his second save. Hugh Stephens had a career mark of 459-203-5 (.692) in 33 seasons from 1950-82. Ray Hedrick is in his 20th season at RMC with a career record of 459-278-6 (.622).

Entering the seventh inning with a one-run lead, 7-6, East Texas Baptist scored nine runs to run-rule the game over Sul Ross State, 16-6. ETBU finished the game with 15 hits as five were for extra bases and 10 players all had at least one hit. Four pitchers saw the mound recording four strikeouts. For the series, ETBU scored 44 runs and had 35 hits with six doubles, two triples, and four home runs. Dylan Burnaman went 3-of-4 with two RBI and three runs scored to lead ETBU. Jacob Evangelista, Carson Wilson, and Landon Durdin all had two hits Wilson led the way with four RBI as Brett Wagner, Durdin, Austin Barry, and Burnaman each produced two RBI. Evangelista and Nicholas Chavez added one RBI. Chavez hit his second home run of the series with a solo shot in the third inning. Matthew Irwin received the win going three innings giving up just one hit and one earned run. Ben Burroughs earned the save going 0.1 innings with one strikeout. Peyton Miller came in and went two innings with two strikeouts and two hits. Robert Croft followed going 1.2 innings with one strikeout and two earned runs.

Washington University put six runs on the board in the first
inning, and junior Will Henkel spun another gem on the
bump as the Bears took down Coe , 10-1. With the home
opener victory, WashU's record stays perfect at 4-0, while
Coe's record sits at 0-1.

Down to its final strike, Wooster's Ryan Kramer tattooed a 2-2 pitch for a go-ahead grand slam in the top of the ninth inning to lift the Fighting Scots' to a 9-8 win over host Spalding. Wooster went on to dominate the middle innings in a 10-4 win against Otterbein later in the afternoon. Wooster (2-1) trailed Spalding (3-2) 8-3 entering the ninth inning, but Wesley Clark (0-1) lost command of the strike zone, walking junior third baseman Nick Pett and junior left fielder Alex Gerdenich. Senior designated hitter Grant Mitchell loaded the bases with a bunt single, then two runs scored when sophomore center fielder John Panstares deposited a single into right field. Next, senior shortstop Eli Westrick walked to load the bases and put the tying run on. Kramer's round-tripper marked the sophomore first baseman's second of the weekend. Gerdenich toed the rubber in the bottom of the ninth inning and shut down Spalding, striking out Joshua Wilmot and AJ Lopez. The junior right-hander induced a game-ended comebacker off the bat of Xavier Rahman.

Webster was back in action when they took on the Franklin Grizzles in Memphis, Tennessee. The Gorloks defeated the Grizzlies by a final score of 7-1 to improve to 2-0 on the year. Kevin Corcoran (1-0) had a great debut for the Gorloks as he allowed just four hits and one earned run while striking out four in 6.0 innings. Wes Cunningham and Scott Detweiler pitched in relief as the two combined to allow two hits while striking out four in 3.0 scoreless innings. The Gorloks put together 12 hits in the contest with five different players recording a multi-hit game. Karl Peters led the way for Webster as he went 2-for-5 with a solo home run (1) and four runs scored. James Theodore, R.J. LaRocco, Evan Evola, and Dylan McKee each recorded two hits in the game with McKee also recording an RBI. In addition, Parker Murrow went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and Nathaniel Martinez drove in a run to round out the top performers at the plate for Webster.

Averett defeated Southern Virginia 13-2 in Game 1 of the scheduled doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. Due to rain, Game 2 was halted in the fourth inning, the teams will resume play next time they are scheduled to face on March 6 at Owen-Fulton Field. In the top of the third of Game 1, Averett (2-8, 0-0 ODAC) had a big inning, scoring five runs. Sophomore Chris Byrd led off the inning with a double to center field. Junior Caden Grider reached first on an error from the pitcher, allowing sophomore Chris Byrd to score. Junior Kevin Zischke cracked a double to left field to send Grider to third. Freshman Jack Turner hit a single into center field to score Grider. Redshirt junior Luke Harris laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Zischke and advance Turner to second. Junior Preston Robbins smoked a double into left field to score another run for the Cougars. Sophomore Trevor Testerman cracked a double into right field to score Robbins, making the score 7-1.

Kean improved to 5-1 with a 25-2 win over SUNY Old Westbury on Saturday afternoon. Twenty-three Cougars saw action in the game as subsitutes were inserted early. On the mound, Nolan Rowan picked up his second win of the season after tossing five innings of four hit, one run ball. Offensively Coppola and Petrosh led the Cougars with three RBI each. Wright was a perfect 3-for-3 after entering the game in leftfield, a homer shy of the cycle. In all, six Cougars had a multi-hit day with six recording multi-RBI.

Stockton (2-0) scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to secure a 9-5 victory over #19 Salve Regina (1-1) on Saturday afternoon. Nick Avagnano continued his hot start with three hits and three RBI to lead the Ospreys. Stockton took another brief lead in the bottom of the seventh when freshman Russell Halvorsen blasted his first career home run for a 5-4 advantage. Once again Salve Regina knotted the score in their half of the eighth, setting up the late Stockton rally in the bottom of the stanza. Tony Gatti singled, Tucker Elder walked and both advanced on a wild pitch. Max Kaplan scored Gatti and Avagnano followed with an RBI single to score Elder for a 7-5 lead. Kaplan would score later on a passed ball, before Avagnano would plate the final run on a wild pitch to make it 9-5. Kyle Cipolla tossed a scoreless ninth inning to nail down the win for Dylan Sakele.

Illinois College opened their 2024 season by hosting the 2024 IC Baseball Invitational with a doubleheader against Loras College and Wisconsin Lutheran College Saturday at Joe Brooks Field. The Blueboys completed the opening day sweep by coming back from a three-run deficit against Loras to win 8-5 which was followed by a 8-6 victory over the Warriors. For game one, Adam Passmore led IC with two hits while tying Connor Hennemann with a team-high two runs batted in. Branson Shaw pitched six innings on the mound and struck out seven batters for the win. wor the second game win, IC was led in hits by Nolan Decker with three while Passmore led with three runs batter in. On the mound, Andrew Wieneke pitched five innings and struck out seven.

Jack Roode and Wilson Irvin each posted three RBIs and Sewanee scored multiple runs in four innings en route to a 14-1 victory in eight innings over Vermont State-Castleton. Irvin belted a three-run homer in the sixth that started the onslaught in the final three innings. Sewanee plated two runs in the seventh thanks to four walks in the inning and Ethan Williams capped the scoring with a two-run double in the eighth. Matt Munn (2-0) tossed four scoreless innings of relief for the victory, walking one and striking out four. Sewanee starter Luke Bishop worked three innings, allowing one run on two hits with two walks.

FDU-Florham (1-3) exploded for 19 runs in their morning contest against Saint Elizabeth (1-1) to upend the Eagles 19-1, but fell short against Drew (1-1), 4-2 in the Madison Ave Challenge. On the full day, Brody Donovan led the way with six RBI on three hits and scored three runs. Jake Hendershot collected four hits, two RBI, and stole four bases while Aaron Santos notched two hits, two RBI and two doubles. In his first appearance and first start on the mound this season, Chris Kaponis got the win because of the seven-inning contest. He pitched four innings, allowed only one hit and zero runs and struck out eight batters. Ben Cohen and Michael Dunay. Cohen pitched an inning, allowed one run, no hits and a run while Dunay pitched two innings, allowed no hits or runs and struck out two batters. For Drew, three pitchers combined on an eight-hitter. Junior transfer Matt Colucci started on the mound for Drew and worked 5 2/3 innings, allowing just one run on six hits while striking out three en route to his first victory as a Ranger.

Kalamazoo continued non-conference play with a road doubleheader at Principia on Saturday. The Hornets completed the three-game sweep over the Panthers with a 7-5 win in game one and a 20-0 victory in seven innings in game two. Braden Mussat started on the bump for the Hornets and threw five innings with eight strikeouts and two walks. He allowed four runs on five hits, including two home runs. Charlie Peterson (1-0) got the win out of the bullpen by allowing just one run in the sixth and striking out one. Brenden Oprinski got the three-inning save (1) and struck out six while not allowing a run. In game two, Kalamazoo scored at least a run in every inning. Chase Cummins (1-0) won on the hill after throwing three scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Robert Ahlgren made his collegiate debut with a perfect fourth inning, including two strikeouts. Jaden Williams pitched the fifth inning with a strikeout, and Ben Van Nes came on for the sixth inning with two strikeouts. Joe Wade came in and completed the shutout in the seventh, and the pitching staff surrendered just one hit in game two.

Lewis & Clark scored four runs in the third inning of game one to hold on for a 5-2 win, then came from behind in the second game of the daytyo win 5-4 to earn the non-conference sweep over Northwest Conference foe the University of Puget Sound on Saturday afternoon and secure the first two program wins at Jerry Gatto Field. Senior Luke Bass went 3-7 with five RBI, two runs scored and a home run on the afternoon to lead the Pioneer offense. Fellow senior Jakob Ghammachi, junior Will Heron and sophomore Joaquin Sandoval added home runs during the day to help Lewis & Clark improve to 4-3-1 on the season. Lewis & Clark earned their first doubleheader win over Puget Sound since February 2016.

No. 16 Denison picked up its first win of the 2024 season late on Saturday night as the Big Red outhit the Sea Gulls 3-2 en route and took down No. 2 nationally-ranked Salisbury by a final score of 9-1 at the D3 Showcase. It was the first meeting between Denison (1-1 overall) and Salisbury (3-2) since a 2-0 win for the Sea Gulls over the Big Red in the championship game of the 2022 Granville Regional. This time around, five Big Red players had two hits in this one while three players had a pair of runs batted in. It was also a great showing for junior pitcher Nick Falter (1-0), who allowed just two hits and one run through his six innings of work. Falter walked three batters but struck out nine, and then senior George Viebrock picked up the save after pitching the next three innings and holding the Sea Gulls to without a hit to go along with one walk and four strikeouts.

If Saturday's doubleheader season opener is an indicator, Grinnell can expect some great things in 2024. Pioneer pitchers held Nebraska Wesleyan University to a .190 batting average and fanned 21 batters while Grinnell's hitter piled up 15 hits in a sweep of the Prairie Wolves. Grinnell won the opener 7-3 and followed that up with a 6-1 decision. Grinnell put together nine hits in the opener, including two from Ethan Crawford. Michael Flaherty added two RBIs, while starting pitcher Ian Feld scattered four hits and issued just one run while fanning eight in five innings on the mound. In the second game, Jake Hull struck out four and gave up five hits over seven innings on the mound. Jackson Gutta threw hitless ball and struck out three in the final two frames. Mac McCain had three of the Pioneers' hits and Ian Brown 24 knocked in four runs, including an RBI groundout in the first.

John Frazier pitched a complete game to start the day and Cal Lutheran baseball's offense exploded in game two as the Kingsmen swept a doubleheader on Saturday with Redlands. The Kingsmen won 4-1 and 12-9. With the two wins, the Kingsmen won the season series with the Bulldogs. Frazier pitched his first collegiate complete game and picked up his first win of the season. In his 9.0 innings, he gave up just six hits and one earned run. He struck out five while only walking three. He faced 36 batters with nine flyouts and 12 groundouts. Down 6-1 in the nightcap, the Kinsmen scored runs in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to tie the score. Troy Anderson homered in the fourth and Alec Garcia had 2 RBI in the sixth. After Redlands took a 9-6 lead in the seventh, the Kingsmen responded with six runs in the eighth. Five different Kingsmen had a RBI and the pitching did the rest to clinch the series.

Senior catcher Avery Benson laced a one-out single in the bottom of the 11th inning to drive home the winning run in Mississippi University for Women's 4-3 non-conference win over Wright State University-Lake Campus at CCA Field. The victory by the Owls (4-1) over the Lakers (4-3), was MUW's third-consecutive win. Down 3-0 after WSULC plated three unearned runs in the third, MUW was able to claw its way back to make it 3-1. In the Owls' final at-bats of regulation, with two runners in scoring position, senior Loren Cox was called on to pinch hit. Cox smacked a single to centerfield, easily scoring Clark. The aggressive Owls' sent Setchfield home as well, but the MUW outfielder was cut down at the plate on a perfect throw to send the game into the 10th inning. In the MUW 11th, Austin Telano walked to set the stage for Benson's game-winning knock up the middle.

Elizabethtown opened up the 2024 season with a 16-9 over Eastern Mennonite, Saturday. The second game of the doubleheader was canceled due to rain. AJ Bednar went 3-4 with two runs scored and four RBI, along with a double and a triple. Quinten Perilli went 1-2 with two runs score and three RBI. Bryce Keller went 3-5 with three runs scored and an RBI. Kyle Mulville picked up the win on the mound, pitching 5.1 innings.

New Jersey City University opened its 2024 campaign at a special location this afternoon as the Gothic Knights hosted SUNY Brockport out on Coney Island at Maimonides Park, which is home to the Brooklyn Cyclones, High-A minor league affiliate of the New York Mets. NJCU impressed against the Golden Eagles, using strong pitching and a first inning offensive outburst en route to the 6-3 victory. Junior right-hander Andre Dean earned the opening day start and eventual victory for the Gothic Knights (1-0), making his return to the mound for the first time since 2022. Dean was dominant throughout, holding Brockport (0-1) hitless through 3.0 and finished with a line of 5.1 innings tossed, one earned on three hits with seven strikeouts. After he mowed his way through the top of the first, his offense got to work in the home half.

In a non-conference doubleheader against Division II Central Washington Wildcats, George Fox team won twice, taking the first game 11-4 and the second 4-3. Carson Coulter went 4-8 with three RBI doubles on the day, including the game-winning double in the second game. Jeremey Sangalang went 5-8, with four RBIs over the two games. Bleu Ellis went 2-5 with a home run in the first game, and Ryder Edwards picked up the multi-inning save in the second game.

DePauw opened the 2024 season with a 13-3 win over Capital in seven innings before dropping a 6-3 game against host Centre. In the Capital game, the Tigers grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first and wrapped up its scoring in the seventh as Louis Florida singled home one and Danny Glimco brought home another with a sacrifice fly. Capital scored once in the seventh, but it wasn't enough as the game ended due to the 10-run rule. DePauw and Centre battle through four scoreless innings before DePauw grabbed a 1-0 lead in the fifth but Centre struck for four in the bottom of the fifth for a lead they would keep.

After coming up with several clutch defensive plays in regulation, Rochester outlasted Washington & Lee 8-7 in 10 innings during action at the D3 Showcase at Atrium Health Ballpark on Saturday afternoon. Entering the bottom of the ninth inning, Rochester (2-0) held a three-run lead, up 4-1, but the Generals were able to get an RBI ground out and clutch pinch-hit 2-run home run by Jack Belbot to draw even and send the game into extras. In the tenth, Rochester plated four runs, three of which were unearned to regain a big cushion on the scoreboard. UR's Quincy Jaksch had the go-ahead hit, an RBI single to score pinch runner Zach Herzog. Sammy Besztery added a bases loaded walk and Josh Leadem drove in two with a double during the four-run frame. Washington & Lee refused to go down without a fight though, scoring three times again off of relief pitcher Mark Aaronson in the bottom of the tenth to make the Yellowjackets sweat it out. Aaronson eventually retired substitute Jacob Jackson on a ground out to strand the tying run on base, giving the Yellowjackets the win.

Elijah Maris' walk-off home run gave Linfield the 3-2 game-one win over visiting St. Martin's at Roy Helser Field on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats then rallied from a seven-run deficit in game two to win the second game off a Nick Holm sacrifice fly in the bottom of the tenth inning, topping the Saints 12-11. Wyatt Hurley and Elijah Maris led the 'Cats offense with three hits each. The Wildcats totaled 10 hits. In game two, eight pitchers touched the rubber for the Wildcats. Nick Alder (1-0) came away with his first win, pitching the final three innings in relief. On offense, Maris, Danny Kahn and Bodey Smith each tallied extra-base hits as Linfield tallied 12 hits. Matthew Lewis tied a game-high with three RBIs.

SUNY New Paltz kicked off its first two games of the season Saturday in the Virginia Wesleyan Round Robin at Perry Field. The Hawks dropped their first game against the Alfred State Pioneers, 14-3 before coming back to win, 4-1 over hosting Virginia Wesleyan. James McGovern got the start in game two and delivered as he went five innings pitched, giving up just four hits, two walks with five strikeouts in the win. Dillon Ristanto finished with two hits and a home run, while Tommy Kreider recorded a solo homer as well. "In game two Gov was outstanding," New paltz head coach Tommy Seay said. "He located his fastball and was able to mix his off-speed in hitters counts. That's what Gov does, he just pitches. I was pleased with our offensive production today, but we really need to play better defense."

After a tough loss yesterday, the Lynx bounced back against the North Central Illinois Cardinals, defeating them by a score of 6-1. Zac Sohosky did what he does, continuing his dominant collegiate career going 5 ⅔ scoreless innings, surrendering only three hits and punching out nine, and improving to 3-0 on the season. Reid Lampert pitched in relief of Sohosky, navigating a tricky bases-loaded jam, finalizing Sohosky's line at 5 ⅔ innings, 3 hits, and 9 Strikeouts. Lampert then pitched a scoreless two innings, only allowing 1 hit.

Brevard (4-4) split a home doubleheader against Oberlin (1-1) on a chilly Saturday afternoon at Gil Coan Field. The Tornados scored scored three runs in their final two innings at bat in game number two to salvage the doubleheader sweep, 4-3, after the Yeomen took the scheduled seven-inning game one by a final of 6-2. Oberlin jumped on BC early in the first game of the twin bill. Brevard attempted a comeback but the Yeomen wrapped up the win in the bottom of the seventh to open their 2024 campaign with a 6-2 win over Brevard. The Tornados were able to respond in the second game and used timely hitting and baserunning to snatch the back end of the doubleheader.
