Minnesota teams part of Monday slate

Saint John's (Minn.) opened its 2024 season with a doubleheader sweep of Wisconsin-Superior – 3-2 in 11 innings and 9-1 – on Monday, at Haugen Field at Becker Park. The Johnnies (2-0) batted .300 on the day with 10 extra-base hits (eight doubles and two home runs) and a .406 average with runners on base. The pitching staff, meanwhile, held Superior (0-2) to a .180 average and posted 28 strikeouts in 18 innings. The Yellowjackets batted only 3-for-34 with runners on base and 1-for-19 with runners in scoring position in the two games. Senior third baseman Joe Becker and senior right fielder Rodney Erickson led SJU's bats with 4-for-8 performances. Becker totaled three doubles and three RBI, while Erickson hit a solo homer and crossed the plate three times. Becker has now reached base safely in each of his last 45 games going back to the 2022 season.

St. Scholastica opened its season and home opener this afternoon with a commanding victory over the Rams from North Central University. The Saints took an early lead, scoring six runs through the opening two innings, and didn't look back as CSS came away with a 14-3 victory to open the season. Brooks Repking earned his first as a Saint with the dominant victory, overall he was proud of the team effort and energy.

Bard opened the season with a 3-2 win over Cobleskill on Monday afternoon at Honey Field. Bard (1-0) took an early lead in the bottom of the second courtesy an RBI triple by Michael Kurlan, and never trailed thanks to a strong pitching performance. The Raptor pitching staff combined to allow just two unearned runs on five hits. Five Raptors posted at least one hit, and Gavin Gonzalez and Kurlan had an RBI each. Senior Aidan Risse threw four innings in his first start of the year, allowing just one hit and notching seven strikeouts. Sophomore Kane Morgan came on in relief and threw four innings and had a career-high seven strikeouts. First-year Nikhil Newman threw the ninth inning and got two strikeouts to earn the save. The Raptors were up 1-0 after two innings of play, and made it 3-0 in the bottom of the seventh off a balk and then an error by Cobleskill. The Raptors held Cobleskill scoreless until the ninth inning when the Fighting Tigers scored off a Raptors error and a balk.

The Clark Summit Defenders traveled to Chichester on Monday afternoon to take on the PSU Brandywine Nittany Lions. The Defenders looked to get their first win of the season against the soon-to-be member of the United East Conference. The Defenders sent Daniel Knight out to the mound, hoping to mow down the Nittany Lions offense. The Defenders did just that in the game , winning 7-3. After scoring a run in the top of the first, the Lions responded with two runs of their own and led the Defenders at the end of the first inning. In the fourth, the Defenders struck pay dirt with a Braxton Richardson home run, tying the game and leading to a 2 - 2 game at the end of the fourth. The Defenders then turned on the offense, scoring four in the fifth inning; the Defenders went up six to two against the Lions. The score stayed the same until the seventh, when Clarks Summit University tacked on another run, making the game seven to two. The Nittany Lions were shut down by starting pitcher Daniel Knight, who pitched eight innings. The Nittany Lions added a run in the bottom of the ninth, but it didn't matter much as Senior Andrew Pelkey closed the game and finished off the Nittany Lions for the win.

Penn State Behrend scored a 12-4 victory in its season debut at Lancaster Bible Monday afternoon. It was originally scheduled to be a doubleheader against the Chargers, but due to darkness game two was shortened and therefore was ruled to be not an official contest. A five-run sixth inning put the Lions up 12-3 as Dylan Barnes drove in his first collegiate run with a double and Mac Ciocco hit a two-run single. David Gibson capped off the six-run frame with his first two career runs batted in. On the mound, senior Jeff Zick tallied the win, throwing two innings and striking out two in his opening day start.

Wartburg continued play in Florida today with an 8-7
comeback win over Alma in 10 innings. The Knights move
to 2-0 after a walk-off single from Garrett Kadolph, The
Knights closed the day with a 28-6 win over Houghton.

Playing in February for the first time in 120 seasons of Gustavus baseball, the Gusties treated their home crowd to a pair of blowout victories on an afternoon that nearly reached 70 degrees. The Gusties belted seven home runs and collected 36 hits with wins of 12-2 and 22-2 over Northwestern-St. Paul on Monday. The Gusties started the scoring spree in the second inning of game one after Isaac Becker led off with a walk and later scored on a Tomas Nelson single. Two more runs came across in the third as Bryce Novak led off with a single and was driven home on a homer by Chris Knowles. The floodgates opened in the fourth with five runs on a two-out rally. Mitch Casperson knocked in Sam Schneider with a triple and Novak followed with a home run. After Drake Siens singled, Gavin Baker hit another homer to make it 8-0. The final four Gustie runs were plated in the fifth as Novak hit an RBI single immediately followd by a three-run homer by Drake Siens. The Gusties wasted no time putting up more runs to start game two, plating seven in the first inning. Knowles blasted his second homer of the day with two runners on base. Tomas Nelson hit an RBi triple and then scored on a wild pitch. Casperson followed with a two-run homer for a 7-0 lead. Gustavus sent 17 batters to the plate in the second frame, scoring 11 runs, highlighted by Becker hitting a three-run homer and then hitting a three-run triple. Danny Gavin hit a two-run triple in the fifth with Joe Burns knocking in another run with a single. The final Gustie run was scored in the sixth as Jacob Weckop singled in Brayden Kohls.

Anderson graduate senior Justin Reed delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Ravens (4-2) to a 6-5 victory against Trine (1-2) on Monday at Don Brandon Field. The Ravens secured the rubber match of a three-game series as they outhit the Thunder 13-10. Carter Knoblauch earned the win with six hits and a run (earned) in 4.0 innings.

Pitt-Bradford took on Bethany on Monday afternoon in a rubber match to decide the winner of a three-game set in West Virginia. The Panthers fell behind early but rallied in the final 5 innings to win 14-7. Pitt-Bradford's offense looked promising early, as they loaded the bases with one out in the first, but could not come up with a big hit to open the score. The Panthers seemed snakebit again in the 4th but the Panthers were finally able to break through in the 5th, exploding for 6 runs to take the lead. In the seventh, the Panthers tacked on 4 more runs that put the game out of reach. Jacob Sherdel (1-0) picked up the win with a strong relief effort. He pitched 4.2 scoreless innings, allowing just 2 hits and 2 walks. He struck out a pair. All 9 Panthers recorded a hit in the game, with 4 posting multihit efforts.

Waynesburg logged 6-5 (8 Inn.) and 4-3 wins over La Roche in a home non-conference doubleheader Monday afternoon as Mike Bell and Todd Burner posted walk-off singles to open the 2024 campaign. In game one, Dalton Mount singled to start the bottom of the eighth, and he advanced to Third as Gavin Pratt ripped a double to left center. Bell stepped to the plate and roped a line drive single off the side of the mound and into center field to deliver the 6-5 opening day win for the Jackets. After Mount grounded out to start the last of the seventh, Pratt was hit by a pitch, and he advanced to second on a Bell single to left. Alec Engelmore added a single to load the bases, bringing Burner back to the dish. Burner roped a walk-off single to center to clinch the 4-3 win and a sweep of the the opening day twin-bill.

Millsaps won their fourth consecutive game by downing Castleton, 7-6 behind an eighth-inning rally at Twenty Field on Monday. Junior Evan Scott went 2-for-3 with two doubles, walked and tallied three RBIs. Senior and Flowood, Miss., product Case Page batted home three runners, including the go-ahead run in the eighth and generated two hits. Graduate Branyan Bounds went 2-for-4 with a walk, stolen base and scored twice. Junior Bradley Pelle led the team with two stolen bases, three runs scored, while adding an RBI and walk to his accolades. Sophomore Gavin Tranchina pitched 3.1 innings, while allowing one run, three hits and threw three strikeouts. Freshman Dylan Welter struck out four batters in 1.1 scoreless innings with zero hits and one walk. Senior Graham Harrison closed out the last two innings in scoreless fashion for the win. He allowed one hit and one walk, while striking out two batters.

Owen Duggan went 3 for 4 with three runs batted in to give Salem State a 7-4 opening day victory over Gordon College on Monday afternoon at the Central Campus baseball field. The Vikings are now 1-0 on the young season while the Fighting Scots are 0-1. Brock Pare pitched five innings and gave up only one run while striking out six, with just one walk, and allowed only two hits to earn the win. Fighting Scots starter Brett Moore was the losing pitcher. He pitched 2.1 innings and allowed five hits, four runs with three of them earned.

The Lasell Lasers swept a doubleheader against Fisher College on Monday 6-1, and 8-7 at Fraser Field. The Lasers start the season 2-0 while Fisher drops to 2-10 on the year. The Lasers offense was active all day collecting 13 hits in game one and was led by Freitas and Edwards who collected three hits and an RBI apiece. Baumann and Audet each had two hits and two RBIs as well to help the cause. Adam Marsh collected the four inning save, allowing four hits, and one run while walking just one and striking out three. Game two was more of the same for the Laser offense as they collected nine hits and scored 8 runs. a The pitching staff put in a collective effort in game two with big performance from senior Darek Lallo who threw 2.1 innings allowing only 2 hits while getting two big punch outs to end his innings
