Upsets the rule in the SCIAC on Friday

Hardin-Simmons' snapped its nine-game losing streak with a 3-0 win over the University of the Ozarks in the second game of an American Southwest Conference doubleheader on Friday afternoon in Clarksville, Ark. Ozarks won the first game 6-3. Senior Wyatt Tumlinson (1-3) put an end to the streak with a dominating nine-inning three-hit shutout. He struck out a career-high 10 in the game.

Whittier head coach Mike Rizzo and the Poets hit the road Friday afternoon to begin their second SCIAC series of the season against Cal Lutheran. Whittier was able to take an early lead in this game and Maximus Berber held it down on the mound, to carry the Poets to a 3-1 victory. Berber took the ball for game 1 of the series, looking to bounce-back after Chapman last week. The junior did more than bounce-back, as his excellent complete game performance was the engine behind the Whittier victory. The pitcher got some early support in this game, getting runs in the first, third and fifth innings. Other than a solo shot by Cal Lutheran in the sixth inning, Berber kept their bats at bay. The Whittier starter went the full 9 innings, with 5 strikeouts and 1 earned run, on 114 pitches. The Poets defense backed up their pitching today, turning 3 double-plays for the team.

Redlands (7-3, 2-2) upset No. 21 La Verne 8-3 on Friday afternoon thanks to a seven-run seventh inning. The Bulldogs had a slow offensive start as they scored once through 6.2 innings as starter Tyler Reiter and reliever Jakob Russell kept them in the game thanks to a combined six, three-run innings to that point. The lead-taking and game-winning hit came from Ian Umscheid, who also was a pinch hitter, when he singled up the middle and brought home Tyler Preece and McClelland for a 4-3 lead. Russell proceeded to get the Leopard in order in the seventh and eighth and worked around a two-out walk and steal to get his first win of the season. This was Russell's fifth appearance of the season and the third time he's gotten more than three outs as he finished with 3.1 scoreless innings with five strikeouts.

Shenandoah started the Mr. V Memorial Classic with an opening day win over the Eastern Connecticut State Warriors by a score of 7-5 Friday morning on Kevin Anderson Field. Frankie Ritter paced the Hornets with four hits in four at-bats with an RBI and a walk. Chandler Ballenger plated two runs while scoring a run himself. Pearce Bucher, with his 1-4 performance today, has now extended his hitting streak to the first seven games. Nick Bell got the start for the Hornets and pitched four innings, giving up four hits, and four runs, all earned, walked three, and also struck out three batters but did not factor into the decision. Jackson Sherman picked up the win for the Hornets, pitching one inning, and giving up no hits, but did walk two batters. Matt House picked up the save for the Hornets, as the graduate student went 1.1 innings to close out the game.

Sophomore Owen Davis belted a three-run home run and drove in four to propel the Johnson & Wales to a 9-8 win over Rowan University Friday afternoon in the season-opener for both programs at Salisbury University. Senior Riley Hasson added two hits and plated three for the Wildcats, who also received RBI doubles form senior Jack Magane and junior Nicolas Fortes. JWU – which rallied for five runs in the seventh to turn a 5-4 deficit into a 9-4 lead – pounded out 12 hits on the afternoon, led by four from juniors Trevor Juan and Xavier Botelho. Sophomore starter Aidan Vining allowed eight hits and five runs over six innings to earn the win for JWU. The preseason All-America selection did not walk a batter and fanned four. Junior Garrett Fusco worked two-plus innings in relief of Vining and struck out two before turning game over to Ryan Schultz.

The Curry Colonels defeated Emerson 14-11 on Opening Day of the 2024 baseball season at New England Baseball Complex on Friday  afternoon. With the win, the Colonels start the season with a 1-0 record. Curry heads to Florida over spring break for a nine-game road trip before returning home to take on Eastern Nazarene on March 18th. Tommy Marshall led the Curry offense, going 3-for-5 with a double, three RBIs, and a walk while scoring three times. Sophomore Reegan Thomas also had an efficient day, going 3-for-5 from the batter's box, including a double. Aiden Finnegan and Kyle Doolin were another major part of the Colonels offense, with both of the pair driving in three runs.

The Crown Polars faced off with UW-Stout in the first contest of the season and came out on top 8-2. Aiden Volk-Specht started on the mound for the Polars and pitched 2 innings allowing only 2 hits, no runs, and struck out 4 batters. Ryan Vondracek got the win in the contest as he pitched 2 innings and totaled 5 strikeouts only allowing 1 earned run. Tristan Camp, Jefferson Barmoy, Danny Gallardo, Jacob Van Dam, and Drew Girtz all pitched 1 inning each and totaled a combined 7 strikeouts. Mason Brock totaled 4 hits in 5 at bats and totaled 3 runs and 2 RBIs including a solo home run. Howie Hatton went 2-4 on the day with a walk and 2 RBIs. Matthew Shaugabay went 3-4 with a double and a walk. The Polars totaled 8 runs on 13 hits. "The pitching staff did a phenomenal job today, each getting their opportunity to contribute," said Head Coach Colt Sedbrook.

Stevens scored a season-high 15 runs and hit three home runs on the day, as they beat Rutgers-Newark 15-0 Friday afternoon at Dobbelaar Field. Sophomore William Sotiropoulos (1-0) picked up his first win of the season in a six-inning effort. He struck out a career-high eight batters while allowing just one hit and no runs. Sophomore Jonah Swarts (1) picked up his first-career save. He pitched three innings and allowed just one base runner. He struck out five batters. Junior Eli Somers, graduate student Michael Reyes, and first-year Garret Wolf each homered for Stevens. The Ducks open up the season 5-0 for the first time since 2021. The Ducks are now 3-0 at home. With the win, Stevens improves to 8-3 all-time against the Scarlet Raiders, winning five-straight against them.

Three multi-run innings and solid pitching helped No. 24 Arcadia to a 7-3 win in non-conference play over Kean on Friday evening. Kean opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first. The Knights took the lead with three runs in the top of the second on a throwing error by the Cougar pitcher scoring Gabe Diaz, and RBI's from Anthony Bruno and Tommy Ajjan bringing home Solomon Griffith and Matt Donchez, respectively. Justin Massielo launched a first pitch homer in the top of the sixth, followed later in the inning by a run-scoring single to center from Diaz plating Emilio Pallante to make the lead 5-2. After Kean cut the lead to 5-3, Donchez and Bruno brought in runs in the top of the ninth to finish the scoring. Jack Dovidio got the win in relief allowing one run over 2.2 innings with two strikeouts. Cam Nebel earned his first save in 2.1 scoreless innings of relief, striking out four batters.

The University of Dallas won their series opener, 11-1 in seven inning, against Randall on Friday, improving to 8-1 on the season. The Crusaders took control from the first inning, scoring three runs on three hits and never looking back. Adrian Montenegro was mowing down the opposition, perfect through his first eight batters and struck out five in four innings. Montenegro finished the game with seven strikeouts and one earned run in six innings of work. Paxton Huff was 2-for-3 with a walk, two stolen bases, and three runs scored. Simon Turner led the team with three RBI, going 2-for-4 at the plate with a stolen base.

With a thrilling six run comeback in the ninth inning, King's recorded its first win of the 2024 season against Clarks Summit at the Defenders' home field, Schautz Field, with a final score of 12-7. Justin Stefanowicz, Owen Kosar and Brayden Schoonmaker loaded the bases at the start of the nineth inning before Sutton was walked to give the Monarchs their sixth run. Nick Ciszak singled again before Jaiden Wanamaker also walked to give King's two more runs to give the Monarchs their first lead of the game. Chase Yochem stepped up to the plate with a big bat and ripped a three-run double to put King's up 11-7. Michael Marmolejos hit a single just before the end of the Monarchs' at-bat that gave Yochem a chance to score from a Clarks Summit error to end the top of the ninth with a 12-7 lead. The Defenders retired all three batters to end the game and give King's its first win of the season.

with four RBIs with a grand slam to end the game for the
Sagehens.

Grove City College received a pair of complete games Friday from its starting pitchers as the Wolverines swept a doubleheader with Rose-Hulman at the RussMatt Invitational, held at Northeast Regional Park. Junior Evan Umland held the Engineers to four hits over seven innings in a 2-1 Game One victory. Freshman Sam Bevin earned the win in the nightcap, striking out five in seven innings as the Wolverines secured an 8-2 victory. Neither starter walked a batter. In the opener, Grove City broke a scoreless tie by scoring twice in the top of the sixth inning. Bevin singled in junior shortstop Luke Vittone to open the scoring. Sophomore center fielder Nick Sampson scored the eventual game-winner when he came home on a single from junior right fielder Josh Minnich. The Wolverines (6-3) stormed to a 6-0 lead in the second game by scoring three times in each of the first two innings and rode the arm of Bevin for the sweep.

Gwynedd Mercy University (2-3) welcomed Rosemont College (0-4) to Frank O. Genuardi Legends Baseball Field where an offensive outburst and a brilliant game from senior Frank Ebling - 7.0 IP, 0R, 4H, 1BB, 5K) from the Griffins allowed the team to enter the weekend with a thrilling 11-1 victory. Multiple Gwynedd Mercy University players had multiple hits including, sophomore outfielder Chris Nodeland (2-for-4), junior outfielder Cooper Root (2-for-5), senior infielder Nick Price (2-for-3), junior infielder Ricky Templeton (2-for-4), freshman infielder Ryan Horner (2-for-4), and freshman infielder Drew Haines (2-for-5).

The 19th-ranked Trinity (Texas) Tigers split a Friday doubleheader with #22 UW-Whitewater, battling for an 8-7 win after suffering a 21-2 loss to start the day. Game two was easily the most competitive of the series as Trinity matched the early scoring output by UWW. The Warhawks took a narrow 4-3 lead with a run in the fourth, then had the Tigers doubled up with two more scores in the seventh. Instead of pulling away as they had the first two games, Whitewater watched as Trinity rallied with a five-run seventh to take an 8-6 lead. Pierce Matthews crushed a go-ahead grand slam to do most of the damage, then Korson Hastings doubled in an extra run later in the game that wound up being the difference. Despite the large score differential in game one, the teams played all nine. The Warhawks scored early and often posting five runs over the first two innings. Eli Frank paced the Warhawk offense with a 4-5 day at the plate adding four runs scored and our RBI. Two of his four hits went for doubles. Darryl Jackson and Matt Scolan each tallied three hits as UWW registered a total of 21 in the contest.

Moravian rallied for a 6-5 walk-off win in the opener and took the second game 12-8 versus Gordon to sweep a doubleheader in the RussMatt Invitational at Lake Myrtle Park Friday. The Greyhounds won the opener in walk-off fashion, their second walk-off of the year, in the bottom of the seventh. Cole Cherkas led off with a single and freshman Domenic Venini came on to pinch run. After a stolen base and a balk, Venini crossed the plate with the winning run on an RBI sacrifice fly to left field by graduate student third baseman Justin Otero. Senior Aaron Flyte made the start on the mound and tossed 5.2 innings with four runs, three earned, on seven hits and a pair of walks to go with a strikeout. Sophomore Stefano Garofalo faced one batter while sophomore Ross Huffman pitched the final 1.1 innings with a run on a hit and walk to go with a strikeout as he earned his first win of the season. Moravian had 13 hits between the two games with ten coming in the second contest.

In a rare American Southwest Conference double header on Friday, #8 East Texas Baptist University swept Concordia University Texas in their first two conference games of the year. ETBU is now 8-3 overall and 2-0 in the ASC. ETBU won game one, 6-0, as Sayers Collins pitched a two-hit shutout and then won the hitting game, 9-5, in game two. Overall, ETBU had 22 hits (7 doubles) and 17 runs and the pitching staff had 20 strikeouts. In the opener, After three scoreless innings, ETBU scored six runs in three innings for the win. Collins had a no-hitter through six innings before giving up two hits in the seventh. He retired the first nine batters and then in the fifth and sixth inning. Both teams combined for 27 hits in the game but CTX recorded four errors as ETBU scored eight runs over the third through fifth innings for the sweep.

UW-Oshkosh defeated Webster 11-1 in seven innings at Grizzlies Ballpark on Friday. Brenden Max hit a career-best 4-for-4, including a home run, with five RBI, three runs scored and a stolen base. LJ Waco pitched a complete game win, fanning four batters, while allowing six hits and a run. With an 10 run lead, Waco forced two flyouts before allowing two runners to reach the basepath in the bottom half of the inning. The Titans then got the final out when Housinger fielded a ground ball and threw to Stebane for a force out.

FDU-Florham (3-3) was as hot as could be offensively, totaling a 22-hit performance that propelled the Devils past the City College of New York, 15-3 during Friday's non-conference action. Matt Aber and Tyrus Chippendale both led the way with four hits. Aber collected three RBI while Chippendale notched two Jack Giovenco tied Aber on the day with three RBI brought in on three-of-five hitting while Jake Hendershot's two hits on the day were both triples. It was during the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings when the Devils blew the doors off the game with a combined nine runs between both of them. In the bottom of the seventh, runs were scored on a fielding error that scored Brody Donovan, a sacrifice fly by Dylan Hode that plated John Rolli, Aber and Chippendale singles through the right side and a throwing error. Robbie Hughes got his second starting nod of the season today. He pitched 2.2 innings, allowed three runs (one earned) and struck out two batters. After Hughes exited, it was a bullpen day for the Devils that saw six different pitchers get a chance to pitch. Christian Weippert, who relieved Hughes, was awarded the win as the relief pitcher of record when the Devils took the lead.

Swarthmore earned its first home victory of the season on Friday, defeating Stockton University, 13-9 in eight innings. The contest was ended early due to darkness. The Garnet trailed 4-1 in the second inning but exploded for six runs in the frame to take a 7-4 lead and they remained in front the rest of the way. The Ospreys cut the deficit to one (8-7) in the fifth but Swarthmore answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning to pull away for good. All nine Garnet hitters scored a run with eight recording at least one hit. Matthew Silvestre was 2-for-4 with a team-high three RBI and one run. Jett Shue went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. Brad Johnston also went 2-for-3 and he drove in one while scoring twice. Xavier Taylor also notched two hits in three at-bats.

St. Mary's (Md.) (2-3) hosted the Vermont State Lyndon Hornets (0-4) in their first home game of the year. The Seahawks came out on top, 4-2. The Seahawks struck first in the opening inning to take a 1-0 lead. Chase O'Dell singled down the line with one out to advance George Berbakos to third. Berbakos would go on to score. St. Mary's had three straight singles to begin the second inning. Trevor Smith would reach home on an error from the Hornets. The Seahawks took a 2-0 lead. Vermont State Lyndon recorded their first run and first hit of the day in the top of the fourth inning to trim the Seahawk lead to one. Cole Tarleton would begin the bottom of the seventh inning with a lead off triple. Tarleton went on to score on the next at bat off of a sac fly from Gavin Wathen. Just an inning later, George Berbakos hit a triple of his own to get into scoring position. Chase O'Dell recorded a sac fly RBI to get Berbakos home for an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth. The Seahawks led the Hornets 4-1. The Hornets scored a run in the top of the ninth, but the Seahawks slammed the door shut on any comeback attempt after that. St. Mary's took the game, 4-2.

Senior outfielder Nolan Lutz finished with three hits and four RBI to help lead Washington & Jefferson to a 10-5 victory over Pitt-Greensburg on Friday evening at Ross Memorial Park. W&J took control of the game with a five-run outburst in the third inning. The Presidents closed the scoring in the bottom of the seventh with a single run. NolanDrew Lutz finished with three hits and four RBI to pace the offense. Garth reached base four times and scored two runs. Joe Lehner added two hits and two runs scored. Sophomore pitcher Anthony Pass tossed four innings to pick up the win. Pass struck out six and walked two. He allowed just one earned run.

Adrian began its trip to California on Friday afternoon with a doubleheader at Chapman University. The Bulldogs split the day with No. 16 Chapman as Adrian took game one in extra innings, 6-5, followed by a 5-3 loss in game two. The opener went to extra innings. In the top of the tenth, the Bulldogs scored a pair of runs on an RBI single from Jakob Charles and a sacrifice fly from David Kedrow to lead 5-3. Chapman answered back with two in the bottom of the inning to continue the game. In the top of the 12th, Kedrow singled in another run to give Adrian a 6-5 lead and hold on to win. In game two it weas Adrian who jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. Chapman responded to take a 2-1 lead after the first inning. They extended the lead later in the game adding a run in the second, fourth, and sixth inning. Adrian didn't go away and battled in the ninth. AJ Miranda drove in two more runs on a two-run homer to left field, but the Bulldogs couldn't complete the comeback.

VTSU Castleton (1-6) secured their first win of the season after defeating TLU (5-6) 5-3 Friday night in Seguin, Texas. Sam Crawford's big day on the mound backed by Hunter Perkins' (3-4) two RBI's and Jackson Cardozo (3-5) at the plate. After taking a day off, Castleton entered today refreshed and ready to pick up their first win of the season. The Spartans got off to a hot start in the first inning. With Perkins and Cardozo getting on base with their first at bats, Jared Maher (1-2) hit a single through the right side of the field to advance the runners and bring Perkins home for the first run of the game. Continuing the hot start, Alex Bingham (1-5) was able to bring Cardozo home from his at bat to give Castleton an early 2-0 lead. Behind Castleton's victory was Crawford on the mound. The Hopkinton, N.H. native gave the Bulldogs nothing but problems at the plate. In six innings pitched, Crawford tossed seven strikeouts on 97 pitches and only allow one run through five innings. The Bulldogs began connecting on some hits and attempted at making a comeback on the Spartans. However, sophomore Luke Russell came in for the final three innings and was lights out for the Spartans. Russell struck out two batters and only allowed one run to shut down the Bulldogs comeback attempt to secure the save and give Castleton their first win of the season.

Virginia Wesleyan (7-5) defeated Southern Virginia in a doubleheader winning game one 6-3 and won game two 5-2. Micah Fox led the Marlins offense going 3-for-4 with a double, scored one run, and had one RBI, Josh Goodrich went 2-for-2 with a double, scored one run, and had one RBI, and Samuel Kasprow went 1-for-3 with a double, scored one run, and tallied one RBI. Ian Brady got the win on the mound for the Marlins as he started the game and pitched 4.0 innings, allowed two runs on three hits, and struckout four. In the nightcap, Jack McDowell started and pitched 4.2 innings allowed two runs on five hits, and had five strikeouts.

Hendrix defeated the University of St. Thomas 3-1 on Friday evening at Warrior Baseball Field to kick off their weekend series with a win. The Warriors entered this weekend's series on the heels of a five-game skid and got a massive lift from the pitching staff, which only allowed one run on one hit on the evening to shut down the Celts' offense. The man of the hour was Jack Hodgins, who etched his name into history with his 245th career-strikeout to set a new program record for career-strikeouts. Hodgins came on in relief in the 6th inning and fanned the first and third batters he faced, putting the Celts down in order in his lone inning of work on his way to the decision.

New Jersey City played its first home game of the 2024 season, hosting the Bears of St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn at Caven Point Field in Jersey City, N.J. The Gothic Knights dominated after an early offensive explosion and a strong outing by the pitching staff, picking up the 9-3 victory on Friday. Senior utility Ali Pompey got the afternoon started by striking out the side. The Gothic Knights (2-1) took advantage of the early momentum, and plated four across. In the top of the seventh, Pompey got himself into a no-out, bases-loaded jam, and gave up his first and only earned run after an RBI groundout by St. Joe's. The Bears brought in a second run after a passed ball in the following at bat, but the second runner was thrown out at the plate. A groundout to second got Pompey out of the inning, and gave him a seven-inning nine strikeout afternoon. NJCU gave up just one more run in the eighth before shutting down the Bears and taking a 9-3 victory. Pompey pitched a career-high seven innings and recorded a career-high nine strikeouts.

Playing in front of their home crowd for the first time in 2024, the only part of Franklin's home opening game that wasn't perfect were the chilly temperatures at McDowell Field on Friday afternoon. The Grizzlies (2-2) dominated Hope (0-2) in an 11-0 win, taking the first of a three-game set between the two sides. Matthew Johnson hurled six brilliant innings and the offense worked nine walks off Flying Dutchmen pitching to take the victory in seven innings. Adam Taylor had a team-high three RBI in the game followed by two from both Tysen Lipscomb and Daniel Cross.

New York University raised its 2024 record to 5-0 with a 9-1 win over Vassar on Friday at Staten Island University Hospital Community Park on Staten Island, NY. The Violets fell behind 1-0 after the first inning, but scored a pair of runs in the third and fourth, and added another in the fifth to take the lead and stay in front. The Violets added two more runs in the seventh and eighth to complete the scoring. Leading the charge offensively was lead-off hitter Harrison Blueweiss, who went 4-for-5 with three stolen bases. Cam Dunn and Joe Cetale each had a pair of hits, while Cetale and Max Oliveira each knocked in two runs. Mason Morello was a stalwart on the mound. The Violets' starter went 7.1 innings, allowed five hits, struck out five and gave up the lone run. Neither Zack Cetin (0.2 innings) or Ansel Balmer (1.0 innings) allowed a hit in relief.

Alma rounded out their spring break trip in Florida on Friday against the University of Mount Union. The Scots won their fifth game of the trip by a final score of 12-7, and rounded out the week with a 5-2 record. Tyler Johnson started the game on the bump for Alma and was awarded the win for his five innings of work. Johnson struck out eight batters while only allowing two hits and zero earned runs. Hayden Hileman and Davin Reif came in as relief on the mound and each recorded one strikeout before Czajkowski stepped on the mound in the ninth and struck out two of the three batters to close out the game. During the game, Carnicom also recorded his seventh walk of the season which puts him alone at the top of the record book for career walks with 84, adding to his impressive resume.

Colby-Sawyer kicked off the season in style on Friday night defeating Massachusetts Maritime Academy in both games. The Chargers won the first game by a 15-10 final before closing out the night on top by a 7-6 margin. This is the first time since March 9th of 2013 that the Chargers started the baseball season 2-0. Senior Zach Rogers got the start going an inning of work before leaving due to injury. Rogers ended the game with a pair of strikeouts and an earned run on two walks. Sophomore Will Carpenter earned his first collegiate win tossing three innings of work allowing five runs all earned with a punch out. Sophomore Justin Powers closed out the game going the other three innings picking up his first collegiate save. Powers allowed four runs all earned with a strikeout in the win. Janai Cruz led the offense in the first game going 2-for-3 with three RBIs, a double and a run scored. O'Brien also had a big opener going 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two runs-batted-in. The bats stayed hot for the visitors coming into the second game as the Chargers push the Charger lead to 6-1 headed into the bottom of the fourth. The Chargers bullpen did its thing holding the lead into the sixth inning where the Buccaneers bats woke back up to even the score in the inning on three hits. Junior Erik Rohs got a crucial out with the bases loaded to keep the score at 6-6 headed into the final inning. In the seventh inning the Chargers got the go ahead run without registering a hit as junior Griffin Wheeler walked to bring in Staffier. In the bottom of the frame Watson closed the door to give the Chargers the sweep. "Today was a great day for the team", said graduate student Cooper O'Brien "We had a great all around win, everyone came to play. We were clutch when it counted. On to the next." "Huge team wins today", said first year Noah Staffier. "Our energy was high all 14 innings and we just went out there and had fun."

Junior first baseman Diego Salazar went 3-for-4 to lead an 11-hit attack and senior righty Ethan Carpenter worked six innings to win his second game of the season as Rutgers University-Camden defeated Penn State-Abington, 9-3, on a cold afternoon here Friday. Rutgers-Camden scored in every inning except the sixth and eighth as it took advantage of 11 hits, six walks and five Abington errors. Carpenter, meanwhile, worked six innings, scattering seven hits and allowing three earned runs. He didn't walk any batters and struck out eight while raising his record to 2-0. Salazar finished the day 3-for-4 with one run and two RBIs, while Evan Carbone and Auggie Uzdanovics both went 2-for-4 with one run scored. Jacob Watson had one hit and two RBIs and Steven Shaffer walked twice and scored two runs. Josh McGee and freshman center fielder Donato Incollingo had two hits apiece for the Nittany Lions.
