ROCKY MOUNT, NC - The 2024 USA South Baseball Tournament has come to an end on the campus of N.C. Wesleyan University. The host, and top-seeded, Battling Bishops claimed their second consecutive and ninth all-time tournament title with a 17-2, seven-inning, victory over second-seeded Brevard in the second game of the best-of-three championship series.
As the visiting team on the scoreboard, N.C. Wesleyan's offense started hot with Blake Scott hitting a three-run home run to give the hosts an early advantage. The Battling Bishops would double their tally from the first inning by scoring six in the top-half of the second. After an RBI double by Drifton Padgett, Tyson Bass hit a two-run home run, his third four-bagger of the championship series. The hitting continued as Davie Morgan knocked in a run followed by a two-run single from Alex Moskal. After a scoreless third inning, N.C. Wesleyan scored another five runs in the top of the fourth inning, one on a solo shot by Jackson Hobbs and then a four more thanks to a Jaiden Barker grand slam.
The Tornados got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning when Colson Miller provided their only runs of the game on a two-run home run. N.C. Wesleyan responded in the top of the fifth inning when Moskal capped the scoring with a three-run home run, the Battling Bishops' fifth long ball of the game.
On the mound, Chandler Padgett went the distance for N.C. Wesleyan, getting the win after allowing just two runs on five hits with four walks and seven strikeouts.
