Young Boxers Drop Season Opener To Sagehens

More news about: Pacific

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Playing in their earliest ever start to the season and earlier than any Northwest Conference this season, a young Pacific squad found themselves sunk by two big innings in a 10-3 loss to Pomona-Pitzer in baseball action at Alumni Field.

The Sagehens (1-0) erased an early Pacific lead by putting together big innings against the Boxers' young pitching.  Pomona-Pitzer scored three runs in the fourth to take the lead for good and padded the advantage with five runs in the sixth.

Travis Koon (Fr., Salem, Ore.) led Pacific (0-1) in his first collegiate game, going 2 for 4 with two runs and a run batted in.  He accounted for the Boxers' first two runs.  Kevin Schwartz (Jr., Milwaukie, Ore.) also finished 2 for 4.  Nick Frederick led Pomona-Pitzer by going 4 for 4 with three runs, four runs batted in, a triple and a home run.

Koon opened the game with his first collegiate hit and gave the Boxers the 1-0 first-inning lead when he scored on a Mike Nagamine (Jr., Aiea, Hawaii) single.  Pomona-Pitzer tied it when Frederick hit a solo homer to open the home half of the second, but Koon matched the feat in the third when he connected for a solo shot.

The Sagehens finally got to rookie Pacific starter Jason Sawyer (Fr., Scappoose, Ore.) for three runs in the fourth.  Nick Gentili got things going when he reached on an error.  Frederick followed two batters later with a long triple that plated Gentili and Erik Munzer.  Frederick later plated himself on a sacrifice fly by Travis Rooke-Ley.

Pomona-Pitzer put the game away in the sixth against reliever Brett Nakasone (So., Wahiawa, Hawaii).  Munzer opened scoring when he came around on a single by Frederick.  Teddy Bingham followed with a single that plated Frederick from second.  Rooke-Ley scored by way on an error before Travis Bowers doubled to bring around Bingham and Garret Lenhardt.

The Sagehens added one more in the seventh when Munzer singled and later scored on a fielder's choice.  Nagamine added the Boxers' last run in the eighth, singling with one out and later scoring on sacrifice fly by Scott Rowland (Sr., Salem, Ore.).

David Colvin earned the first win of the year on the mound for the Sagehens, allowing two runs on eight hits with a walk and 10 strikeouts.  Sawyer proved quite effective in his first start, allowing four runs, three earned, on four hits with one strikeouts in five innings, but took the loss.

The two teams will complete their three-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday.  First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m.
