Hendrix sweeps Austin in doublheader Saturday

SHERMAN, Texas. (Feb. 19) -- Hendrix College used a five-run spurt in the 10th inning to outlast Austin College in the opener, 8-3, and the first year duo of 1B Thomas Weber and LHP Nick Richardson helped lead Hendrix to a 4-2 win in the night cap on Saturday afternoon at Baker Field.

The Warriors (2-4, 2-2 SCAC) jumped out to a 1-0 lead after junior Clark Sims tagged a solo shot over the left field wall in the second inning of the opener.

Hendrix added two runs in the sixth when first year Collin Radack took an RBI grounder to the right side and first year JT Bowen collected an RBI single.

Austin responded and knotted the game with three runs on two hits and two errors in the bottom half of the sixth.

The Warriors pitching staff did not allow a hit in the three extra innings, while the Warriors bats exploded for five runs on four hits in the 10th frame. First year Jacob Perschke singled in a run and scored a run, while junior Andrew Thames hammered a two run single and Radack stole home during the key stretch.

Hendrix junior RHP Teddy Smoyer tossed a gem with 8.0 innings of work, no earned runs, six strikeouts and just three hits. First year Justin Mosbey entered in the ninth inning and picked up the win to improve to 1-1 on the year.

Richardson scattered four hits over 5.0 shutout innings and struck out four batters in his first collegiate win in the night cap. The Warriors bullpen cleaned up the last two innings and junior RHP Drew Gustafson fanned one batter in the seventh inning to pick up the save.

Junior Mark Vlaskamp ignited a three-run rally in the third with an RBI base knock, before Weber tripled in a run and senior Jeff Forgerson doubled around a score.

Austin made it a one-run ball game in the sixth after a bases loaded throwing error scored a run and a grounder to second pushed another run across.

Hendrix added an insurance run with two outs in the seventh when junior Kyle Raskin singled to left, stole second and took home on an error in left field.

Sophomore Matt Burke tossed the complete game for his first loss of the season, 1-1. He allowed eight hits, no earned runs and struck out three batters.

The two teams will wrap up the three-game set with a nine-inning game on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT.
