WHITTIER, Calif. – It was a rough outing for the Purple Sox as Concordia (Cal.) scored eight runs in the first two innings en route to a 16-3 win on Wednesday afternoon at Memorial Field.

Whittier (3-2) was forced to use four pitchers with no one lasting longer than 3.1 innings. Keith Hoefel got the start but was tagged for seven runs on seven hits in 1.1 innings. Austin Straus relieved Hoefel and allowed six runs (four earned) on six hits.

Ryan Schwenn allowed just one unearned run in 2.1 innings of work while Austin Noguerira rounded out the efforts on the mound with four strikeouts in 2.0 innings. He allowed two runs.

Whittier scored its first run of the game in the first inning as an answer to the five spot the Eagles scored. Taylor Fallon led off the game with a double and scored one batter later on an RBI double from Cory Goodchild.

Dan Gleiberman singled to advance Goodchild to third but he was stranded 90 feet from home as Concordia retired the next three batters in order.

After a leadoff walk by Sean-Michael Nada, Goodchild doubled to put runners on second and third in the seventh frame. Gleiberman singled home Nada on the next at bat and Darby Weppner drove in Goodchild for Whittier's third run.

In all the Poets had 11 hits with Goodchild, Gleiberman, Alex Gast and Nathan Mendez recorded multi-hit afternoons.

Fallon, Weppner and Nada had the other three hits for the Poets.

Whittier will return to action on Saturday afternoon as it hosts British Columbia at 1 pm.
