GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Christopher Newport won their seventh straight game today, holding off a late rally by Greensboro College (4-9, 0-2) in a 14-8 win that improves CNU to 8-1 overall, 2-0 in USA South action. The Captains were led by left fielder Connor Madden, driving in six runs with a double and a triple in the game and scoring twice.

After being held to just three runs on Saturday, the potent Captains offense showed up on Sunday, scoring 14 runs in support of starter Greg Goldsmith. CNU got on the board right out of the gates as Shannon Mark and Drue Vernon opened the game with back-to-back singles. Mark scored on a sacrifice fly by Ben Lenda and Steven Lindemuth drove in Vernon with an RBI single.

Greensboro tied things up at two in the bottom of the second with a two-run home run off the bat of Joseph Powell. After both teams went quietly in the third, CNU put some distance between in the fourth, scoring six runs in the top half. The Captains loaded the bases with a single, error and walk before Madden laced a bases clearing triple to right field. Mark doubled in Madden and Vernon gave CNU its second triple of the inning to score Mark. Lenda stepped in and drove home Vernon with a single into right field.

The six-run inning gave CNU an 8-2 lead in the fourth, a lead they would hold the rest of the way.  CNU added four runs in the seventh, as Madden again stepped up with the bases loaded and cleared them with a double. He would then score himself on a sacrifice fly from Mark as CNU opened up a 12-3 lead.

Greensboro cut into the lead with four in the bottom of the seventh, but CNU answered right back with two in the eighth as Lindemuth and Lenda each scored in the inning.

Goldsmith went 5.1 innings for CNU, striking out four and allowing three earned runs. He improves to 3-0 this season. Matt Verdillo closed out the sixth for CNU, recording one strikeout; he was followed up by Jacob Vaughn and Nick Santalucia. Santalucia pitched 2.1 innings of relief, allowing just one run.

Madden led the offense, going 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored and 6 RBI. Mark finished with a 3-for-4 night with 2 runs and 2 RBI, while Lenda went 3-for-6, Lindemuth 2-for-3, and Vernon 2-for-4 to round out the multi-hit days for CNU.

Greensboro got a pair of home runs in the game from Powell and Michael Cobb. Ryan Summerford was a perfect 3-for-3 with 3 RBI and a run scored.

The Captains stay out on the road this week, completing a run of six straight days with games away from home. Tomorrow CNU will face Johnson & Wales on a neutral field in Myrtle Beach at 1:00 pm. CNU will then travel to face Piedmont on Tuesday, and back to Myrtle Beach for games against Staten Island Wednesday and Alma College on Thursday.
