#1 Heidelberg Posts 16-1 Win Over Olivet

Fort Myers, Fla. – March 7, 2011 – Senior second baseman Gar Keen (Sparta, Ohio / Highland) went 3-for-3 with five runs batted in to lead the no. 1 ranked Heidelberg University baseball team to a 16-1 victory over Olivet College at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Fla. The win improved Heidelberg to 2-0 on the year, while the Comets fell to 0-2.

Keen also scored three times and his plate appearances were highlighted by a bases clearing double to right center field during a five-run sixth inning. He picked up his first RBI on the day in his first at bat, sending the ball through the left side.

For the game, the Berg offense finished with 13 hits, including six extra base hits. Ricardo Lizcano (Toledo, Ohio / Roy C. Start) finished with two triples, while Elvin Williams (Euclid, Ohio / Euclid) had two doubles. Williams backed Keen at the plate with a 3-for-4 outing with three runs scored, a RBI and two walks. Lizcano added two walks to his statistics for the game, to go along with four runs scored and two RBI. Willie Brechun (Canton, Ohio / Canton Central Catholic) finished with two hits, including a two-run home run to left field in the sixth inning. It was the second straight game that Brechun has sent one out of the park.

Senior Brian Koehl (Sylvania, Ohio / Sylvania Northview) got the start on the mound and made a statement early. He opened his final campaign striking out the leadoff batter and went on to record at least one strike out in six of the seven innings he threw. During the fourth inning, Koehl took care of Olivet with the assistance of Jordan Martin (Powell, Ohio / Olentangy) behind the plate as he struck out all three batters he faced, including two looking. For the game, Koehl struck out nine, while giving up six hits and one earned run. Williams and Andy Lowe (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Carroll) combined to close out the game and did not give up a hit. Williams led the way with two strike outs in the eighth.

For the second consecutive game Heidelberg led off with three straight hits which led to an eventual 2-0 lead after one inning of action. Heidelberg added a run in the second before Olivet erased a shutout with a RBI double to right center field in the third inning.

After a scoreless fourth inning Heidelberg plated 14 runs over the next four innings en route to the win.

Heidelberg returns to action tomorrow when it takes on Ohio Wesleyan University in a 10:00 a.m. contest at the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Fla.
