Dolphins Snap Skid With Road Win At Staten Island

Staten Island, N.Y. – Junior Anthony Mongelli (Flushing, N.Y.) worked 6.0 strong innings for the College of Mount Saint Vincent Baseball team who snapped a three game losing streak with a 5-2 win on Wednesday afternoon at Staten Island. The Dolphins managed just two hits in the game, but Tyler Pope (Massapequa, N.Y.) and Mark Sargente (Commack, N.Y.) each drove in a pair of runs.

Mount Saint Vincent would get on the board with two runs in the top of the first inning when Sargente drove home a pair with his first double of the season. Christian Lavery (Westbury, N.Y.) led off the game with a walk and James Labartino (Holbrook, N.Y.) later reached on a fielder's choice to set up Sargente's two out double.

The Dolphins would tack on a run in the fifth to make it 3-0, before Staten Island broke through against Mongelli in the home half of the frame. Henry Roman singled through the right side with two outs to cut the Staten Island deficit to 3-1 heading to the sixth.

The Mount continued to tack on with another run in its half of the sixth when Mike Pope (Massapequa, N.Y.) drove home John McManus (Bayside, N.Y.) with the Dolphins' fourth run of the game.  McManus led off the inning getting hit with a pitch and later advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt.

Each team scored a run in its last at bat, with the Dolphins adding an insurance run when Tyler Pope was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 5-1. Staten Island scored its only other run of the afternoon when Pat Gale drew a walk with the bases loaded to close out the scoring at 5-2.

In his second start of the season, Mongelli allowed just four hits and one run for the Dolphins as he picked up his first win of the season. He struck out seven batters on the day and surrendered four walks. Mike McManus (Bayside, N.Y.) worked two scoreless innings in relief for the Mount, allowing two base hits.

Five different Mount Saint Vincent players scored a run in the game, with Mike Pope collecting a hit, a run and an RBI for the Dolphins. He was the only player in the lineup to finish the game with a hit and a run for the Mount.

Overall on the day, Mount Saint Vincent was outhit 7-2 by Staten Island with Roman going 3-for-4 for Staten Island. He was the only player in the contest with more then one hit.

The win moves Mount Saint Vincent to 2-4 overall on the season. The Dolphins will be back in action again on Thursday afternoon when they travel to Centenary for a non-conference matchup. First pitch with the Cyclones is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
