Six Run Sixth Keys Win for Wesley

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - Wesley College used a six run sixth inning to break open a 2-2 game and went on to win 10-4 against CAC foe St. Mary's (Md.).

The Seahawks (10-9, 3-6 CAC) had taken a 2-0 lead in the second inning on RBI singles by Matt Baden and Eric Gronbeck.  

The Wolverines (15-3, 3-2 CAC) responded with a run scoring double by Rob Benedict(Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) and an RBI base hit by Steve Perone (Skillman, N.J./Montogomery) that tied things at 2-2 in the fifth.

But the Wesley offense broke through for six runs in its next at bat to break the game open.  Geoff Kimmel (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence) led off the inning with a double and scored on an error.  A two-run single by Corey Jefferson (Wilmington, Del./Archmere)put the Wolverines up 5-2 with no one out.  Another run came in on a single by Benedict and Kimmel drove in two more with a single to make it 8-2.

Gronbeck added his second RBI hit of the day as part of a two-run bottom half of the inning that cut Wesley's lead to 8-4.

The Wolverines put the game away with single runs in the eighth and ninth.

Kimmel and Jefferson had three hits apiece and both players drove in two runs.  Benedict had a pair of base hits and knocked in two runners.  Ryan Polk (Croydon, Pa./Truman)singled twice and Perone had two RBIs.

Jordan Lozzi (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) pitched 5.1 innings to improve to 3-0.  He allowed five hits and walked six, but also struck out five.  Zach Stuart (Palmyra, Pa/Palmyra Area) tossed 3.2 scoreless innings to earn the save.

Baden and Gronbeck led St. Mary's with two hits each.

Mike Victory took the loss, surrendering eight runs in 5.1 innings on 10 hits and a walk.  He struck out three.

Wesley travels to Haverford on March 15.
