Bennett's Walk-Off Double Gives Choctaws Doubleheader Split

CLINTON, MS - Senior Shane Bennett drove a two-run double into the right field corner to give the Choctaws a 4-3 walk-off win over Texas-Dallas in the first game of the doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Frierson Field.

The Comets bounced back for a 20-15 win the in the second game in which the Choctaws scored 10 runs in the bottom of the ninth.

Bennett drove in all four runs in the first game, including a two-run single in the third inning to give the Choctaws a 2-0 lead.  The former Clinton High School standout finished the game 2-4 with 4 RBI.

After MC starter Terrell Prescott recorded the first two outs of the fourth inning, the Comets put together three consecutive hits, culminating with an RBI single by Clint Dunham to cut the lead to 2-1.

Jason Diemer drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning and homered in the sixth inning to give the Comets and 3-2 lead.

Junior Jeremy Simmons opened the seventh inning with a one-out, pinch-hit double down the left field line.  Senior Stuart Magee reached on an error by the right fielder and junior Spencer Brunson walked to load the bases for Bennett's walk-off hit.

Junior Bo Craig earned the win in relief for the Choctaws, striking out one in the top of the seventh.  Prescott struck out five and allowed two earned runs over 4.2 innings.

Calvin Campbell took the loss for UTD, allowing two hits and one earned run over the final 1.1 innings. 

In the second game, MC made seven errors and allowed 10 unearned runs on their way to the 20-15 defeat.

Dunham gave the Comets a lead they would not relinquish with two-run double off the center field wall in the first inning.  Dunham went 5-9 with two runs scored and six RBI over the doubleheader.

The Comets led 8-0 before the Choctaws scratched the scoreboard with a solo home run by Magee in the sixth inning.  Senior Brandon Benton singled home a run, while senior Clay Crosswhite drove in a run on a groundout to cut the lead to 8-3.

UTD scored four runs in the seventh and eight in the eighth to take a 20-5 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning.

The Choctaws put up 10 runs in the frame, highlighted by a two-run home run from senior Don Thomas and a three-run home run by Brunson.

Scott Trousdale allowed sevevn hits and four earned runs in 5.0 innings to take the loss.  Marvin Prestridge struck out eight over 7.0 innings to collect the win for the Comets.

The Choctaws will be back in action on Thursday when they host Rust College at 2:00 p.m. at Frierson Field.
