Denison upsets No. 4 Marietta 7-4

GRANVILLE, Ohio — No. 4 Marietta College had its nine-game winning streak snapped with a 7-4 non-conference loss to host Denison University Thursday (March 24) evening. [Box Score]
 
Senior Britt Meador (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) and junior Kirby Becker (South Euclid/St. Ignatius) both collected a game-high three hits while sophomore Alex Toth (Painesville/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin) added a pair for the Pioneers, who fell to 13-2 overall. Three different players had two hits for the Big Red, who evened their record at 8-8.
 
Marietta jumped out to a 2-0 advantage after an inning and one-half when senior John Snyder (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) delivered a RBI double in the first and Toth a RBI single in the second.
 
Denison, however, answered in its half of the second to take a 4-2 lead against Pioneer starter Mark Williams (Fayetteville/Perry), who took the loss to fall to 2-1 after allowing four runs on three hits in three frames.
 
The Big Red then added a run in the fourth against junior Austin Blaski (Pandora/Gilboa) to boosts its advantage to 5-2.
 
A RBI single from Meador in the seventh and another from sophomore Jordan Grilliot (Brookville/Northmont) in the eight cut the Pioneers' deficit to 5-4, but Denison scored two unearned runs against junior Kyle Lindquist (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) in the bottom of the eighth to seal the 7-4 upset.
 
Blaski struck out five and scatted five hits in his four innings, while Lindquist allowed one hit in his frame of work.
 
The Pioneer offense collected 13 hits but the defense finished with a season-high four errors in the loss.
 
Dale McOsker (1-2) earned the victory after holding the Etta Express to two runs on eight hits over six innings.
 
Marietta will look to bounce back at 11 a.m. Sunday (March 27) when it plays host to Montclair State University in non-conference action at Don Schaly Stadium.
