FOREST GROVE – Chad Fahey (Jr., Keizer, Ore.) threw a complete game five-hitter Sunday as Pacific prevented a series sweep by beating Willamette 1-0 in Northwest Conference baseball action at Chuck Bafaro Stadium.

Fahey demonstrated good control in a pitcher's duel that saw both pitchers limit the teams to a total of 10 hits. In improving to 3-2 on the year, Fahey allowed five hits and four walks while striking out seven. He allowed just three runners past first base, and none until the sixth inning. Both hurlers moved fast, with the game taking 1 hour, 58 minutes.

The Boxers (15-10-1, 9-6 NWC), meanwhile, did their best to get to Willamette starter Chris Torgerson early. In the second, Mike Nagamine (Jr., Aiea, Hawaii) opened by reaching on an error and Nate Rasmussen (Jr., Sandy, Utah) reached on a walk. Torgerson proceeded to retire the next three batters to snuff out the rally. In the third, Nick Tasaka (So., Hawaii Kai, Hawaii) singled to open the inning. He was advanced to second on a sacrifice, but was picked off to close out the frame.

Pacific finally broke through in the sixth in an unusual turn of events. Travis Koon (Fr., Albany, Ore.) doubled with one out, and then advanced to third on a stolen base. On the very next pitch, Torgerson was called for a balk, allowing Koon to score for what became the winning run.

Fahey worked out of a jam in the sixth, walking two runners with two outs before striking out Tosh Semlacher to close out the frame. The Bearcats (11-13, 6-9 NWC) also had three runners reach in the eighth before Fahey coaxed Max Stepan into a foul fly out.

Torgerson also went the distance for the Bearcats, falling to 3-3 on the year. He allowed the one run on five hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Koon led the Boxers offensively, going 2 for 3 with the one run. Tyson Giza went 2 for 4 to lead Willamette.

Pacific now enters a grueling stretch where they will play five games in seven days. The Boxers play at Corban on Tuesday before hosting Concordia (Ore.) in a rain make-up on Wednesday.
