Panthers extend home winning streak to 14

More news about: Chapman

ORANGE, Calif. – Even though the Panthers have turned the calendar, the results on the field remained the same on Tuesday. The Chapman University baseball team picked up right where it left off in March with a 4-2 win over visiting Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges at Hart Park. After going 11-1 last month, the Panthers have now won 19 of 20 and 14 straight at home.

Senior RHP Jordan Sigman (6-1) allowed just seven hits and one earned run over eight innings to pick up his sixth consecutive victory.

Trailing 1-0 in the second inning, No. 8-ranked Chapman (20-5) scratched out a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Senior C Adam Kordich led off with a double into left-center and came around to score on an RBI single from freshman OF Adam Velez. The Panthers scored an unearned run later in the inning to give Sigman a 2-1 lead, which they would not surrender.

Freshman IF Troy Newman reached base twice (walk and single) and scored Chapman's final two runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Freshman IF Mark Saatzer plated Newman in the fourth with a run-scoring base hit. Then, with Claremont nipping at Chapman's heels by scoring an unearned run in the sixth, sophomore OF James Parr came up with an RBI double to give the Panthers an important insurance run in the bottom of the inning. Sophomore OF Charlie Piro was 2-for-2 with a walk and a run scored.

Sophomore RHP Christian Maietta induced a game-ending 4-3 double play to earn his second save of the season with a scoreless ninth.

With the win, Chapman earns the season series sweep against Claremont (17-13), which had entered the game 11-1 in its previous 12 contests. The Panthers welcome SCIAC rival Cal Lutheran University on Wednesday in the only meeting of the year between the two teams. First pitch at Hart Park is scheduled for 5 p.m.
