Schmeltzer Leads 23rd-Ranked Saints to a 12-7 Win at Centre

(DANVILLE, Ky.) - Senior third baseman Sam Schmeltzer (Aurora, Ind./South Dearborn) led the 23rd-ranked Thomas More College baseball team to a 12-7 win over Centre College tonight (Tuesday, April 5, 2011) in a non-conference game at Gary Wright Field in Danville, Kentucky.

With the win, the Saints improve to 14-3 overall and with the loss, the Colonels fall to 10-18 overall.

The Saints scored two in the third, six in the fourth, two in the sixth and two in the eighth, while Centre plated one in the second, two in the fourth, one in the fifth, two in the seventh and one in the ninth.

Schmeltzer led the Saints' offense as he was four-for-five with two runs batted-in and two runs scored.  Three other Saints had multiple hits in the game as freshman second baseman Jason Handley (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) was three-for-four with a double and two runs scored, sophomore shortstop David Kennett (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City) was two-for-five with a RBI and two runs scored and senior left fielder Max Robbins (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was two-for-six with a double, a RBI and a run scored.

On the mound, freshman Jake Samad (Burlington, Ky./Conner) started and pitched four and two-third innings and had a no-decision as he gave up four runs (three earned) on seven hits, while striking out four.  Sophomore David Etscheid (Union, Ky./Ryle) earned the win as he pitched one and one-third innings of relief and gave up only one hit, while striking out one.

The Saints return to the diamond tomorrow (Wednesday, April 6) when they open a four-game homestand as they host Bethany College in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) single-nine inning game starting at 3 p.m. at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
