Westminster Throttles Waynesburg to Break Out of Slump

WAYNESBURG, Pa. - After losing five of its last six games, the Westminster College baseball team snapped out of its recent funk in decisive fashion. The Titans scored 12 runs in the ninth inning to wallop Waynesburg, 16-0, Thursday in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game at Waynesburg. The Titans are now 14-5 and 4-2 in the PAC, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 6-15 and 4-5 in the league.

Westminster outhit the Jackets 17-7 as four Titans posted multiple hits including three with three or more. Junior center fielder Justin King doubled his previous career high for hits in a game as he went 4-for-4 with three runs and an RBI.

Senior left fielder Rick DeBlasio and junior first baseman Tim Wiand each posted three hits and three RBI by going 3-for-6 and 3-for-5, respectively.  Junior second baseman Bud Main  also went 2-for-4 with three runs, two walks and two RBI.

Junior pitcher Patrick Mulligan  pitched his third complete game of the season to improve to 5-0 on the year as he went nine innings with seven hits, three walks and four strikeouts.

Westminster scored single runs in the first, third, sixth and seventh innings before exploding for 12 runs in the ninth. Main walked and later scored on a groundout for the first Titan run in the first inning. DeBlasio singled home runs in the third and seventh innings and Wiand hit an RBI single in the sixth.

The biggest hit in the 12-run ninth inning was sophomore Ty Miller  hitting a three-run homer that gave the Titans an 11-0 lead. The homer was Miller's first of the season and third of his career.

Westminster travels to Geneva Friday at 4 p.m. to begin a three-game weekend series that will conclude with a doubleheader in New Wilmington on Saturday.
