WESTFIELD, Mass. – Roman Mondalto and Bret Siflinger pitched complete-game shutouts and Alex Cloutier had both game-winning hits to lead Westfield State University to a 6-0, 2-0 doubleheader sweep of Bridgewater State University on Saturday, April 9.

Westfield is 3-1 in the MASCAC and 10-12 overall. Bridgewater is 1-3 and 9-9.

In the opener, Mondalto – the reigning MASCAC pitcher of the week – turned in another workmanlike performance in boosting his record to 3-0. The crafty lefty twirled a four-hitter, struck out five and issued no walks. He recorded 14 groundouts and just one fly out in the seven-inning game.

The Owls scored all the runs they needed in the first inning. Matt Kelly clubbed a double and Josh Blair was hit by a pitch. Cloutier then laced a two-run single by the middle.

Westfield scored two more runs in the second for a 4-0 lead. Pete Grillo scored on a throwing error following Pete Hogan's sacrifice hit. Later in the inning Andrew Medeiros plated Hogan with an RBI groundout.

Westfield scored its final runs on a two-run homer over the scoreboard in right field by Kevin Greene.

No. 9 batter Sean Geary had two of Westfield's six hits; he was 2 for 2 with a walk. Dave Billotte doubled for the Bears.

Losing pitcher Jeff Puopolo gave up five earned runs and three walks and fanned six in five innings.

In the second game, Siflinger survived a bases loaded jam in the last inning in recording his five-hit shutout. He walked three and fanned seven.

In Bridgewater's final at bat, Jose Polanco rapped a one-out single up the middle. John Garabedian dropped a bunt and reached safely on a Siflinger throwing error. Billotte grounded out to second base and Tyler Dennis drew a full-count walk to load the bases. Siflinger survived the threat when he got Joshua Ferreira to ground out to second base to end the game.

Westfield scored both runs in the fourth inning. Jeff Ackerman drew a one-out walk and Cloutier clubbed an RBI double to right-center field. Grillo followed with a two-out RBI double.

Both team had five hits. Designated hitter and leadoff batter Andrew Medeiros was 2 for 3 for the Owls. Ferreira was 2 for 4 with a double.

Losing pitcher Corey Batista walked three and struck out six.
