Moravian Takes Two From Royals Today To Complete Landmark Conference Sweep

More news about: Scranton

BETHLEHEM, Pa.—Moravian College's pitching once again kept The University of Scranton's bats silent in taking both games of a 7-inning doubleheader to complete a Landmark Conference sweep Sunday afternoon at Gillespie Field.

In the opener, sophomore Thomas Fenyak (Centreville, Va./Westfield) scattered three hits, struck out four and did not allow an earned run in six innings as the Greyhoulds pulled out a 4-2 victory.  In the nightcap, freshman Jonathan Harasin (Springfield, Va./South County) struck out three and allowed seven hits in six innings en route to a 4-2 win.

With the wins, Moravian College improves to 19-7 overall and is firmly in first place with an 11-1 league record.  The defending champion Greyhounds got two hits apiece from senior Jason Huber (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and junior Austin Rock (Arlington, Va./St. Stephen & St. Agnes).  Rock hit an RBI double to ignite a 4-run rally in the bottom of the second inning and Huber followed with a two-run triple.

In the top half of the frame, Scranton, now 8-14 overall and 4-5 in the Landmark Conference, took a 2-0 lead on an RBI single by senior Jason Lane (Moosic, Pa./Riverside) and sophomore Michael Gaeta (Cranford, N.J./Cranford), who reached base on an error, eventually scored on a passed ball.  Two of Scranton's five hits came off junior Kyle Longernecker (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic), who picked up his fourth save of the season.

Scranton also jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second game.  Junior Matt Rayha (Willow Street, Pa./Penn Manor) started the rally with a single and eventually came around to score on a throwing error and senior David Giglio (Wallingford, Conn./Xavier) hit an RBI single that scored sophomore Richard Pohl (Belvidere, N.J./Belvidere), who singled.

Moravain pushed one run across the plate in the bottom of the fourth when Royal starting pitcher Corey Gorman (Laflin, Pa./Coughlin) hit a batter with the bases-loaded.    The Greyhounds then rallied with three runs in the fifth on an RBI single by senior Jon Baltz (Easton, Pa./Easton) and a sacrifice fly by freshman Joseph Connell (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem).

The Royals will return to action this Wednesday, April 13, against DeSales University in Center Valley, Pennsylvania, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
