ROADRUNNERS SWEEP MOUNT UNION

Winter Haven, FL: The Ramapo College baseball team won a pair of games against Mount Union today, 5-4 and 7-4, in Winter Haven, Florida. Ramapo now stands at 3-0.

Joseph Somma led off the third inning of game one with a bloop double, and scored one out later on a Kevin Knox ground out to short, giving the Roadrunners and early 1-0 lead. Mount Union returned the favor with a run of their own in the top of fourth to tie the game. Ramapo immediately answered right back with a rally started by a Dan Mauriello lead off single in the bottom of the frame. Matthew Hancock doubled, plating Mauriello. Nick Digirolamo sacrificed Hancock to third, who then scored on a Somma single. Somma came around to score the third run of the inning on a wild pitch, 4-1 Ramapo.

Mount Union got one run back in the top of the fifth off Roadrunner starter Tim Hannes, before PJ Cerreto relieved him and stopped the bleeding. The Purple Raiders tied the game with two unearned runs in the top of the sixth, which set the stage for Roadrunner dramatics in the bottom of the 7th. Knox led off with a single, and one out later stole second base. He advanced to third on wild pitch. John Capuano struck out, and Hancock was intentionally walked. Digirolamo stepped to the plate, and drove a single to left field, which scored Knox with the winning run. Hancock finished the game a homerun short of the cycle, while Somma had a pair of hits for the Roadrunners. Hannes threw four innings, giving up no earned runs while striking out five. Cerreto went the final three innings, giving up one hit and no earned runs.

In game two, the teams traded first inning runs before the Roadrunners jumped out for good with two in the top of the third. Digirolamo walked and scored on a Christian Spurr RBI double. Spurr came around on a Hancock RBI single, making the score 3-1.

The game stayed that way until the sixth, when the teams each scored a pair of runs, making it 5-3 in favor of Ramapo. The Roadrunners got a pair of insurance runs in the top of the 7th. Capuano led off with a walk, and scored on a Peter Dacenko double. Somma then sacrificed Dacenko to third, and scored on a Lee Rozins single. John McNeil picked up his first win of the season, going 5.1 innings giving up three runs on four hits. Matt Jenisch picked up his second save of the season, going the final 1.2 innings giving up one run on two hits.

The Roadrunners return to action tomorrow versus Becker College at 4:30pm, in Winter Haven.
