ROADRUNNERS DOWN WESTCONN, 5-2 IN NON-CONFERENCE ACTION

Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College baseball team raised their record to 12-2 overall with a 5-2 non-conference win over Western Connecticut State University. The Colonials fall to 6-7 on the year.

Ramapo got on the board early with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Marco Carolla walked and Nick DiGirolamo ripped a double to right field before Christian Spurr drove them both home on a hard single up the middle, 2-0. The Colonials got one back in the top of the second with a sacrifice fly to left field by Xavier Ortiz, plating Dave Simone.

The Roadrunners scored two more runs in the bottom half of the inning. Rob Dimperio doubled to left center field before he was sacrificed to third base by Joseph Somma. Pat Driscoll then singled to center field to pick up the RBI, 3-1 before he would advance to third base on a failed pick off attempt by WestConn. Driscoll later scored on an infield ground out by Lee Rozins, 4-1.

The Colonials scored their second run in the top of the fourth inning. Following an out to start the inning, Keith Savo walked and stole second before moving to third on a single to left field and later scoring on an infield error. Both teams were held scoreless until the top of the eighth inning when Ramapo added an insurance run. Matthew Hancock drove in Spurr with a two-out two strike single up the middle, putting the Roadrunners up 5-2.

Frank Baldini (2-0) started the game for Ramapo and struck out four over 6.1 innings of work. Tim Hannes earned his first save of the season not allowing the Colonials to score in the final 2.2 innings, he struck out two and walked one. The Colonials threatened to score in the seventh and ninth innings, but Hannes and the Ramapo defense shut them out to preserve the win.

Ramapo opens up the NJAC season when they host Richard Stockton College on Saturday in a double header beginning at 11:30am.
