First-Place W&J Uses Walk-Off Hit to Sweep Visiting Westminster

WASHINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster College baseball team lost both games of a doubleheader Monday at Washington & Jefferson, the first-place team in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC). The Titans lost the first game 9-2 before dropping the second game 5-4.

With three straight losses to W&J (15-13, 11-3 PAC), Westminster (18-10, 5-7 PAC) matches its longest losing streak of the season at three games.

The Titans led 1-0 in both games and they rallied twice to tie the second game before W&J scored in the bottom of the seventh inning in walk-off fashion. W&J's Joe Bogdewiecz hit a two-out single to score Josh Staniscia for the game-winning hit.

Junior second baseman Bud Main led the Titans by going 3-for-7 in both games, including 2-for-4 while scoring both of the Titans' runs in the game-one loss.

Junior first baseman Tim Wiand knocked in Main twice while going 2-for-3 in game one with singles that gave Westminster a 1-0 lead in the first inning and cut W&J's lead to 8-2 in the sixth inning.

Andy Trettel and Marc Lubline led W&J's nine-hit attack with three hits apiece, while Lubline knocked in four runs, including a two-run double that gave W&J a 6-1 lead in the third inning.

Westminster junior starting pitcher Justin Prejsnar  took the loss in game one by going 5 2/3 innings with nine runs (7 earned) off nine hits and five walks to go with five strikeouts.

Jordan Zivoder got the complete-game win for W&J with two runs (1 earned) off seven hits and two walks.

In the second game, junior catcher David Schafer went 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead Westminster.

Junior pitcher Vince Iosue pitched into the seventh inning for Westminster. Iosue struck out five and gave up four runs off six hits and two walks before he left in the game during a rain delay in the seventh inning. Junior reliever Patrick Mulligan absorbed the loss after he entered the game, walked two and surrendered Bogdewiecz's walk-off hit.

Nick Miller led W&J's seven-hit offense with two hits. Presidents reliever Dave Trushel earned the win by pitching 2 1/3 innings with one run off two hits.

Westminster visits Saint Vincent Wednesday for a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
