Corsairs Complete the Season Sweep Over RIC Baseball

North Dartmouth, Mass.-Junior left fielder Brent Hopkins (Cranston, RI) went 3-for-4 and senior designated hitter Gary Levesque (East Providence, RI) knocked in two, but the Rhode Island College baseball team lost, 10-5, at UMass Dartmouth on Monday afternoon.
 
UMD (12-17, 6-4 LEC), who earned an 8-5 decision on Anchorman Field back on April 12, completes the season sweep from RIC (12-16, 3-7 LEC).
 
 The Corsairs scored four times in the second inning, getting RBI singles from senior shortstop Ryan McDermott (Pembroke, MA) and junior third baseman John Granahan (Hanover, MA), a run-scoring double from junior first baseman Anthony Fiorita (North Reading, MA), and an RBI grounder from freshman second baseman Bedward Ortiz (Worcester, MA).
 
 Junior first baseman Dan Hopkins (Cranston, RI) drove in a run in the sixth for RIC with a sacrifice fly, but UMass Dartmouth came back with three runs in their half of the inning, getting RBI singles from McDermott, Ortiz and Granahan.
 
 The Anchormen scored twice in the seventh and twice more in the eighth on a two-run homer by Levesque, but sophomore third baseman Matt Worden (New Bedford, MA) doubled home two runs in the bottom of the eighth to increase the Corsairs' lead to five runs.
 
Senior right-hander Chris Contre (East Bridgewater, MA) allowed two earned runs in 6.2 innings to earn the win, improving to 3-2. Sophomore lefthander Mike St. Martin (Worcester, MA) and junior righty Pat Lavey (Cranston, RI) finished up. RIC sophomore David Hoey (Lincoln, RI), who went the first six innings and allowed seven runs, took the loss and fell to 1-5.
 
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will travel to Salve Regina University tomorrow afternoon (3:30 p.m.).
