SCRANTON, Pa.—Sophomore pitcher Matt Marinelli (Westbury, N.Y./Holy Trinity) and freshman Chris Maglione (Manalapan, N.J./St. John Vianney) tossed complete-game victories to lead The University of Scranton to a non-conference sweep of Penn State-Wilkes-Barre Friday afternoon at Connell Park.
Marinelli struck out four and scattered nine hits in an 18-4 victory in the opener, while Maglione struck out five and allowed just four hits in a 7-0 win in the nightcap. The wins were the ninth and tenth straight for Scranton, now 18-14.
The Royals banged out a season-high 20 hits in the first game, including back-to-back-to-back-to-back home runs by senior Joe Amicucci (Pomona, N.Y./Albertus Magnus), junior Sean Butler (Dickson City, Pa./Scranton), senior John Rogers (Allenhurst, N.J./Red Bank Catholic), and senior Jeff Manahan (Morris Plains, N.J./Morristown) during an 8-run rally in the sixth inning.
Manahan finished with three hits, including a pair of doubles, as did junior Jesse Outhouse (Croton Falls, N.Y./North Salem) and sophomore Michael Gaeta (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) and seniors Chris Stallone (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) and Jason Lane (Moosic, Pa./Riverside) had two hits apiece.
The Royals gave Marinelli a comfortable cushion by scoring seven runs in the first innings.
In the second game, sophomore Michael Amaturo (Rye, N.Y./Rye) belted a pair of doubles and freshmen Michael Trabulsi (Malverne, N.Y./Chaminade) and Edward Ravert (Havertown, Pa./Malvern Preparatory) each drove in two runs apiece to lead the way. Ravert drove in a run during a two-run rally in the second and Trabulsi drove in both of his runs during a three-run rally in the fourth.
Freshman Kyle LeValley (Sweet Valley, Pa./Lake Lehman) and sophomores Robert Bisson (Bethlehem, Pa./Saucon Valley) and Ryan Williams (Trucksville, Pa./Dallas) each hit a double in the opener and Valley, Bisson, losing pitcher Michael Rodriquez (St. Cloud, Pa./Harmony) and sophomore Kyle Jola (Plymouth, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) had a hit in the second game for Penn State-Wilkes-Barre.
Marinelli and Maglione picked up their first wins of the season and both are now 1-1.
The Royals will play their final Landmark Conference series tomorrow afternoon against Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. Scranton has already locked up a Landmark Conference tournament berth and can finish as high as second place pending the outcome of this weekend's games.
