Diplomats Fall in CC Tournament

BALTIMORE – Franklin & Marshall dropped a pair of games in the Centennial Conference (CC) baseball tournament Saturday afternoon hosted by Johns Hopkins. F&M fell 5-3 to Johns Hopkins in the first game and lost 19-2 to Haverford in the nightcap. The losses end F&M's season and brought its record to 22-18.

The Blue Jays got on board first with a run off an RBI single by Mike Musary in the second inning before breaking  the game open with four runs in the third to take a 5-0 lead.  Jeff Lynch's single got the first run and Ryan Zakszeski reached on a fielder's choice for the second run of the inning.  Lynch scored on an error and Zakszeski crossed the plate on a double steal.
 
F&M's pitchers settled in after the third, holding Johns Hopkins hitless the remainder of the game.
 
The Diplomats started to chip away with a run in fourth.  Matt Will was hit by a pitch to start the frame and advanced to second on a wild pitch. J.T. Triantos and Avery Attinson were both issued walks to load the bases. Russell Tischler hit a single two batters later to score Will to make it 5-1.
 
Connor Devlin plated Eric Bornstein in the sixth as the Diplomats came within three run, 5-2. Will's double to left field in the seventh plated Patrick Andrews for the Diplomats final run of the game.
 
Kevin Shields started the ninth with a double, giving F&M a runner in scoring position and the tying run at the plate.  Matt Wiegand (6-1) retired the final three batters to pick up the complete game victory.
 
Matt Valente took the loss in four innings of work. Valente (3-2) allowed three earned runs on five hits. Rob Anderson came in the fifth and pitched four hitless innings for the Diplomats. Anderson finished with four strikes and three walks.
 
Tischler went 2-for-4 with an RBI to pace the Diplomats' offense.  He was the only Diplomat with multiple hits.

Haverford opened up the second game with three runs in the first, two in the second and one in the third to take a 6-0 lead. The Fords added six in fourth and two in the fifth for a 14-0 score. F&M got one back with a run in the seventh.

Devlin singled to start things off and moved to second with a single by Tischler. Devlin crossed home after an error by the shortstop.  The Fords countered with five runs in bottom of frame to make it 19-1.

The Diplomats added another run in the eighth with an RBI single from Andrew Conlan. Blue Wells doubled to start the inning and advanced to third after a single by Bornstein.  Conlan's single brought Wells home for the Diplomats second score.

Brendan McCreary took the loss in two innings of work.  McCreary (2-2) gave up four earned runs off five hits.

Bryan Henrick (8-1) scattered eight hits with three strike outs to pick up the win.
