Two Walk-Off Home Runs Lift Bobcats to a Doubleheader Sweep on Senior Day

FROSTBURG, Md. – Late inning heroics by junior John Barrett (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison (Hagerstown)) in each end of the doubleheader led the Frostburg State baseball team to two wins on senior day against Penn State Altoona. The Bobcats won the first game 9-7 and completed the sweep with a 2-1 win in the bottom of the eighth in the second game.

Barrett hit his fifth and sixth home run of the season to help push the Bobcats record to 25-11 while the Lions fall to 23-10.

The Lions got on the board first in the first game, getting one run on two hits. Senior Jon Sally (Rockville, Md./Magruder) was able to pitch himself out a one-out first-and-third jam with two ground outs to end the inning.

The Bobcats got the run back and then some in the bottom of the second to take a 3-1 lead. Senior Corey Carr (McHenry, Md./Northern Garrett) opened the frame with a single to right field and classmate Matt Ridenour (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) walked to put two runners. Freshman Tyler Hawthorne (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. Dupont) laid down a sacrifice bunt down the third base line to move the runners to second and third. Junior Adam Summerfelt (Gambrills, Md./Archbishop Spalding) put the Bobcats on the board with a sac fly to center to score Carr and more Ridenour to third. Senior Daniel Heatwole (Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby) singled up the middle to bring home Ridenour and freshman Matt Donaldson (Garrett, Pa./Meyersdale) doubled to left center to put runners back on second and third. Junior Garrett Price (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty (Emory & Henry)) singled to left to score Heatwole.

The Lions and Bobcats traded runs in the third, with the Bobcats leading 4-2 after three innings. Barrett and Carr hit back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners and Ridenour reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Barrett to come around and score.

Penn State Altoona put together a four-run fourth to take the lead, 6-4, but senior Timothy Sutcliffe (Lansdale, Pa./Christopher Dock) was able to get two groundouts to stop the damage and keep the Lions within reach.

Frostburg got one run back in the fifth to cut the Lion lead to 6-5. Senior Matt Greene (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) led off with a single and stole second to put himself in scoring position for Barrett. The center fielder got his first RBI of the game with a single to right field to bring home Greene.

The Lions scored their last run of the game in the top of the sixth with a fielder's choice with runners on first and third to push their lead to 7-5 going into the final inning of the first game. Senior Spenser Madsen (Easton, Md./St. Michaels) faced the minimum number of batters in the top of the seventh to help keep the game within reach for the Bobcats. Donaldson led off with a walk and stole second before Price reached on an error by the right fielder that allowed Donaldson to get to third. Greene singled to right center with runners on the corners to pull the Bobcats with one, 7-6. Barrett hit his first walk-off home run of the afternoon on the first pitch he saw in the seventh to give the Bobcats a 9-7 win.

Madsen picked up the win after throwing just one inning with two groundouts and a strikeout.

Once again, the Lions struck first in the second game, but not until the fourth inning. The Lions took the lead, 1-0, on two hits and a Bobcat error. The Bobcats trailed into the bottom of the seventh. Donaldson led off with a single to right field and moved two bases on a passed ball and a failed pick off attempt by the Lions pitcher. Ridenour got the game-tying RBI with a sac fly to center to score Donaldson.

Senior Greg Ross (Towson, Md./Loch Raven) got the Lions out in order in the top of the eighth Barrett worked a 3-0 count to lead off the eighth and got the green light and sent the next pitch he saw over the left field fence to win the game, 2-1.

Senior Spenser Barnard (Bloomington, Md./Southern Garrett) started his first game of the season on the mound for the Bobcats and pitched a scoreless first inning. Classmate Britton Quayle (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) came out in relief and threw four innings, giving up just one unearned run on three hits while striking out six. Senior Josh Davis (Freeland, Md./Hereford (Webber International)) threw one inning and class mate David Lanier (Laurel, Md./Atholton) pitched 0.2 of scoreless baseball to keep the Bobcats within striking distance. Ross got his 10th win of the season facing just four batters over 1.1 inning with two strikeouts.

Barrett finished the afternoon 5-for-8 with five RBIs and three runs while Greene was 3-for-7 with two runs and an RBI and Heatwole going 4-for-6 with a run and RBI.

Frostburg State will return to action when the team travels to Washington, Pa. to take on Washington & Jefferson at 4:00 pm on May 3.
