The Pioneers, who improved to a nation's best 33-3 overall, finished league play with a 17-1 record. The 17-1 mark ties the program's 1991 squad for the second-best record in the history of the OAC since it combined divisions in 1985. Marietta's 1994 and 1999 teams went an undefeated 18-0 to set the gold standard for OAC baseball.

The Etta Express, who posted a .391 batting average and 1.95 ERA against its league opponents this season, kept building momentum for postseason play against the Quakers, who finished the year 9-20 overall and 4-12 in the OAC. Marietta compiled 24 runs on 30 hits while holding Wilmington to five runs on nine hits over 16 innings.

Junior Brian Gasser (New Philadelphia/Indian Valley) remained undefeated and earned his tenth win in 10 starts after scattering a walk and two hits over the first six innings of the opener. Gasser (10-0) struck out seven and lowered his ERA to a team-best 0.89.

Sophomore Michael Radvansky (Toronto/Toronto) worked a perfect seventh to preserve Marietta's 11th shutout of the season.

Senior John Snyder (Altoona, Pa./Altoona), junior Tim Saunders (Alliance/Alliance) and sophomore Bryan Gregorich (Chardon/Chardon) finished 2-for-4 in the Etta Express' 14-hit game-one attack. Saunders collected a team-best three RBI, while sophomore Alex Toth (Painesville/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin) hit his first career home run, a two-run shot in the sixth.

Marietta scored a run in the first before breaking the game open with a three-run fifth and four-run sixth. The Pioneers then capped the scoring with their final two runs in the seven en route to the 10-0 victory.

Junior Mike Mahaffey (Worthington/Bishop Watterson) worked seven strong innings in game two to improve his record to 2-0. The right-hander scattered two runs (one earned) on two hits and two walks while striking out seven. Freshman Phil Emling (Tallmadge/Tallmadge) allowed three runs on four hits before he retired two batters in the eighth, while sophomore Luke Langdon (Troy/Troy) closed the game with one and one-third shutout innings.

The Pioneers, who collected 16 hits in game two, quickly jumped ahead with a four-run first. Wilmington answered with two runs in its first at-bat only for Marietta to follow with a run in the second and three in the third. The Etta Express tacked on a run in the sixth and three more in the seventh before the Quakers got back in the scoring column with a three-run eighth. Marietta, however, responded with a two-run ninth and rolled to the 14-5 win.

Both junior Kirby Becker (South Euclid/St. Ignatius) and sophomore Jordan Grilliot (Brookville/Northmont) finished 4-for-5, while Snyder and sophomore Aaron Hopper (Wheelersburg/Wheelersburg), who hit a two-run home run, added a pair of hits in the game. Snyder extended his hitting streak to a season-best 14 games, while Hopper drove in a game-high three runs.

Marietta remains on the road to visit La Roche College at 1 p.m. Saturday (May 7) in a non-conference doubleheader. It is the final scheduled tune-up for next week's OAC Tournament, which is slated for May 12-14 at Don Schaly Stadium. However, the Pioneers may play a non-conference opponent Monday (May 9) but no details have been finalized at this time.
