Quayle Goes the Distance as the Bobcats Down the Red Hawks, 11-3

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Five different starters had a multiple-hit game and senior Britton Quayle (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) threw a complete game to lead the Frostburg State baseball team to an 11-3 win over La Roche, Friday afternoon to wrap up its regular season.

Going the distance for the Bobcats, Quayle gave up just three runs, all coming in just the first four innings, while scattering seven hits and fanning eight with just one walk.

The Bobcats (28-13) scored first in the top of the first and set the tone for the game. Senior Daniel Heatwole (Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby) doubled and moved to third on a passed ball. Classmate Matt Greene (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) grounded out to shortstop that allowed Heatwole to cross the plate for the first run of the game.

The Red Hawks (25-10) came back in the home half of the first and scored two runs on two hits to take a 2-1 lead. Frostburg got two back in the top of the third to take a 3-2 lead. Junior Torian Cyrus (Beaver Falls, Pa./Beaver Falls (Potomac State)) led off the frame with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice from freshman Matt Donaldson (Meyersdale, Pa./Garrett). Junior Shane Boyd (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus) singled to drive home Cyrus and moved to second on a groundout from Heatwole. Greene reached on an error by the third baseman that allowed Boyd to score.

La Roche got its final run of the ball game in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at three.Ed  Ed Skoneiczny led off the frame with a home run to left field, but Quayle quickly rebounded and set down the next three batters.

Freshman Tyler Hawthorne (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. Dupont) doubled home Donaldson and Boyd to give the lead back to the Bobcats, 5-3. Donaldson tripled and Boyd walked and stole second to put two runners in scoring position for Hawthorne.

Other than a hit in each of the fifth and seventh, Quayle shut down the Red Hawk offense after giving up the solo run in the third.

Donaldson led off the top of the seventh with a single and stole second. With two outs, Greene singled and drove home Donaldson and was able to advance on the thrown. Junior Doug Anuszewski (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) doubled home Greene and senior Corey Carr (McHenry, Md./Northern Garrett) singled home Anuszewski to push the Bobcat lead to 8-3.

The Bobcats added two more runs in the top of the eighth when Donaldson reached on an error by the center fielder and scored on a single from Boyd. Greene reached on an error by the third baseman and Boyd came around to score.

With two outs in the top of the ninth, pinch hitter senior Lucas Streeter (Litchfield, N.H. / Pinkerton Academy) walked and Cyrus tripled to left center to score Streeter for the final run of the game.

Quayle closed out the game striking out the side in the bottom of the ninth.

Boyd, Carr, Cyrus, Donaldson, and Heatwole all collected two hits while Boyd, Heatwole and Greene each had two RBIs.

The Frostburg State baseball team awaits the conclusions of the rest of the conference tournaments to find out where they will be traveling to for the NCAA DIII Regional Tournament.
