Caltech Opens Season with Strong Effort

PASADENA, Calif. -- The Caltech baseball team opened the 2012 baseball season with a doubleheader against Pacifica College.

The two seven-inning games saw the the Gladitors come away with victories but not without a serious fight from the Beavers.

Game One -- Pacifica 7, Caltech 2

The Gladitors scored the first four runs of the game but Caltech made things interesting in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Caltech's first run of the season came when Ben Penserini singled home Nick Robertson with a two-out base knock. Eric Schropp followed that with a single of his own to bring home Blanie Matulevich to get Caltech within 4-2.

Pacifica responded with a two-run ining of their own in the top of the sixth to get their lead back to four runs. After a 1-2-3 inning for Caltech in the bottom of the sixth, the Gladitors added an insurance run in the top of the seventh to all but seal the win.

Aaron Nauls pitched a complete-game, five-hitter to take the win on the mound for the Gladitors.

The pitching duo of Penserini and Ryan Kearney combined to strike out seven batters while walking just one.

Game Two -- Pacifica 10, Caltech 9

Caltech jumped out early in the second game. The Beavers scored the game's first run in the bottom of the first only to see Pacifica take the lead in the top half of the second inning with a pair of runs.

The Gladitors added to the lead with a run in the top of the third before the Beaver bats came to life. Trailing 3-1, The Beavers plated three runs in the bottom of the third highlighted by a Daniel Sexton two RBI triple. Brendan Sheehan added an RBI single to give the home squad a 4-3 lead.

Pacifica re-took the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning. The back-and-fourth game continued as the Beavers plated five runs in their half of the frame. Albie Lavin started the scoring with an RBI single. Blaine Matulevich scored a few pitches later on a wild pitch. Two batters later Jerome Skelly earned his first collegiate RBI by getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The final two runs for the Beavers came courtesy of a Sheehan two-run double to increase the Beavers lead to 9-5.

Unfortunately for the Beavers the visitors scored at least one run in each of the last three innings. Pacifica scored a single run in the fifth inning then tied the game with three runs in the sixth inning. The Gladitors scored the winning run on a double steal with two outs. Robert Contreras swiped second base while teammate Lionel Thomas streaked for home while the throw to nab Contreras was unsuccessful. Caltech's offense went down in order in the seventh to end the game.

Sheehan led the Beavers offense with a 3-for-4 effort with three RBI's. Sexton went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI's. Schropp scored three of the Beaver runs.
