DePauw totaled 34 runs and 37 hits today and swept a doubleheader at Washington-St. Louis and swept the three-game series as well. The Tigers won the opening game, 12-3 and the nightcap, 22-9, to improve to 3-0 on the season. The Bears dropped to 0-3.
In the opener, the Bears jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first, but the Tigers scored three unearned runs in the second and added a single run in the fourth on doubles by Brendon Pashia and Jason Cohen.
DePauw extended the lead to 8-1 in the fifth as Alex Wright scored on Zach Starr's sacrifice fly and Robbie Stein came home when Alex Berlyn reached on an error. by Zach Starr. Pat Lyons drove in a pair with a double to right center.
Washington countered with two in the fifth as Kyle Billig delivered a two-run single. The Tigers put the game away in the seventh as Sam Swafford doubled home Starr and later scored on Rob McPike's ground out. Aaron Henry then knocked in Berlyn and Pashia with a single to center.
DePauw totaled nine hits including five doubles led by Lyons and Pashia with two hits apiece. Billig and Brian Cizek each had two of the Bears' 10 hits.
Andy Manson improved to 1-0 for DePauw with the win, while Brendan Rooney suffered the loss and dropped to 0-1.
DePauw fell behind in game two as the Bears scored one each in the first and second innings and two more in the third. The Tigers knotted the score at 4-4 in the fourth on Chris Forbringer's two-run single and Pashia's two-run homer.
The Bears regained a 5-4 lead with one in the bottom of the fourth before Stein singled home McPike in the fifth to tie the score at 5-5. DePauw added four more in the sixth as Pashia tripled home Forbringer and scored on Wright's single. Starr drove in Cohen and Wright with a single to make it 9-5.
Brandon Rogalski's two-run double in the bottom of the sixth trimmed DePauw's lead to 9-7, but the Tigers scored 11 runs on 10 hits in the seventh to make it 20-7. In the inning, the first nine batters reached on either a single or a walk.
DePauw score one each in the eighth and ninth with Washington tallying two in the eighth.
The Tigers banged out 28 hits led by Forbringer's five. Pashia and Starr each had four hits with Stein totaling three and McPike and Cory Meixner totaling two each. Miexner also homered in the win. Pashia, Meixner, Starr and Forbringer each totaled three RBI.
Washington totaled 13 hits paced by Rogalski, Andrew Dwoskin, Chris Lowery and Cizek with two each. Rogalski drove in three and homered.
Brendan Bolander picked up the win, while Max Gordon suffered the loss.
DePauw takes on Anderson on Saturday, March 3, in Xenia, Ohio.
