Baseball Plates 47 Runs in DH Sweep of Yeshiva

HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 26, 2012) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team totaled 47 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Yeshiva University on February 26 at the DeBaun Athletic Complex-Dobbelaar Baseball Field. The Ducks topped Yeshiva, 26-1, in the opener and then won 21-0 in the nightcap. Stevens tied a school record with the 26 runs scored.

The Ducks picked up their first two wins of the season and nearly tied another school record in the opener with 18 walks, just missing the record of 19 set back in 2002, while the 26 runs equaled the mark set back in 2010. In total, Stevens drew 28 walks and 15 hit by pitches in the double dip.

In the opener, Stevens pounded out 12 hits and erupted for 19 of its 26 runs scored in the 4th and 5th innings.

Offensively, senior catcher TJ Alcorn (Turnersville, N.J.) led the way with a 2-for-4 opener and four runs batted in with two runs scored and a double. Alcorn also walked once.

Also collecting a multi-hit Game 1 were sophomore outfielder Shane Raymond (Easton, Pa.) and freshman outfielder Ryan Mannello (Staten Island, N.Y.). Raymond batted 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs, while Mannello went 2-for-3 off the bench with two runs scored and two RBI. Raymond also walked.

Senior outfielder Ryan Kiczek (Rutherford, N.J.) and freshman outfielder Brian Hennelly (Holbrook, N.Y.) each drove in three runs and scored twice more. Both picked up a hit, while Hennelly drew two walks.

On the bases, senior infielder Tom Phillips (Spring Lake, N.J.) and graduate infielder Matt Glassman (Basking Ridge, N.J.) both swiped two bags. Phillips also scored three times and walked three times, while Glassman scored twice and walked twice.

Junior Kevin Mathews (Jackson, N.J.) earned the start in the opener and tossed four innings to pick up the win. Mathews struck out six batters and walked two while only surrendering four hits. A trio of relieves entered the game for the final three innings and combined to strikeout four batters in perfect outings for each Duck. Freshman Peirce Marston (Silver Spring, Md.) was first out before giving way to fellow freshman John Howarth (Fanwood, N.J.). After Howarth, senior Chris Tucci (Calverton, N.Y.) closed out the game in the seventh inning.

In the nightcap, the Ducks went off for 14 runs in the bottom half of the first inning. In that frame, Stevens drew six base on balls and reached on two hit by pitches.

Hennelly was the star of Game 2 with a 4-for-5 effort with a double, three RBI and two runs scored. Freshman catcher Matt O'Brien (Goffstown, N.H.) drove in five runs as part of a 2-for-5 game with two doubles and a run.

Junior infielder Michael Donovan (Mendham, N.J.) earned a start at third base in the nightcap and went 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored. Donovan also walked once. Sophomore outfielder Dan Allen (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) did not record a hit in Game 2 but walked three times, reached base with two hit by pitches and scored three runs.

Alcorn tallied two more hits with three runs and two RBI in Game 2, while Glassman was hit three times, scored twice, walked and drove in a run.

Kiczek went 0-for-2 but was hit twice, scored three times and drove in two more. Freshman infielder Gregg Nickels (Simpsonville, S.C.) drove in two runs, scored another and was hit twice as part of a 1-for-3 nightcap.

Six different Ducks saw action on the mound in Game 2. Junior Tyler Courter (Glenwood, N.J.) started and threw the first two innings and struck out three while surrendering just one hit. The next three arms out of the bullpen, Mannello, senior John Martelle (Colonia, N.J.) and graduate student Jeffrey Hart (Greenwood Lake, N.J.) eached tossed an inning and struck out three batters. Martelle earned the victory with his inning of work. Freshman Casey Conroy (High Bridge, N.J.) and senior Vincent Vinci (Howell, N.J.) threw the final two innings and punched out four Maccabees.

In all, the pitching staff struck out 16 batters and walked just one.

Stevens is back on the diamond on Saturday, March 3, when Baruch College visits for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
