Union, N.J. (2/26/12) – The Kean University baseball team rebounded from a close loss in game one of their split doubleheader to blank visiting Gwynedd-Mercy College, 13-0, Sunday afternoon.
Kean (2-1) pounded out 11 hits, including six extra-base hits as senior Eddie Jennings led the way with a 3-for-4 performance, a homerun shy of the cycle.
The Cougars provided a balanced scoring attack, recording runs in all but two innings.
Heading into the seventh innings with a 6-0 lead, Kean put the game out of reach with six runs in the frame. Highlighting the inning was a two-RBI double from Jennings as well as a two-run triple from sophomore Joe O'Connor.
Junior Kevin Herget earned the win for the Cougars. Herget (1-0) allowed just two singles with eight strikeouts in seven innings of work. Relievers Nick Zucchero and Yair Lopez closed out the game allowing just one hit, also a single. Freshman Rick Elfreth suffered the loss allowing two runs in three innings.
Offensively sophomore Shane Alvarez was 3-for-5 with two runs scored with sophomore Tyler Smarslok was 1-for-3 with three RBI. For the Griffins (0-1), sophomore Dante Cassano was 2-for-3.
#3 Kean returns to action on Tuesday when they host Moravian College at 3 p.m.
