CLINTON, MS - The Mississippi College baseball team opened the 2012 home schedule with a doubleheader split against Blue Mountain College on Friday night at Frierson Field.

After winning the first game on a walk-off error, 2-1, the Choctaws fell in the second game to the Toppers, 15-6.

The first game was a pitcher's duel between senior Ian Underwood and John Paul Barber of Blue Mountain.  Underwood scattered six hits and one earned run over a complete game victory, while Barber had a no-hitter through four innings before taking the tough-luck loss.

The Choctaws got on the board first in the fifth inning when Chad Wooten broke through for their first hit of the game.  Junior A.C. Lowrance chased Wooten home on a triple into the right center field gap.

The Toppers wasted no time in tying the game when Seth Kennedy doubled home Hunter Mize in the top of the sixth inning.  Mize was the only player on either team with two hits in the contest.

In the seventh, Lowrance drew a one-out walk, and J'Marcus Brooks entered the game as a pinch-runner.  Junior Pate Shackelford singled through the right side and the Choctaws had runners on first and second with just one out.

After Blaine Posey was retired, junior Josh Perez hit a slow roller to first base that was booted and allowed Brooks to score all the way from second for the win.

In the second game, the Toppers got on the scoreboard early when Gardner Richey hit a two-run home run to left field after a walk issued by junior Beau Underwood.  Underwood struck out six batters over 3.0 innings to start the game.

After scoring three runs in the third inning and two runs in the fifth, Blue Mountain took a 9-0 lead in the seventh on a solo home run by Dalton Kulas and an RBI single by Ben Wallis.

The Choctaws got on the board in the bottom of the frame with an unearned run and answered a five-spot by the Toppers with five of their own in the bottom of the eighth.  Senior Jeremy Simmons started the scoring with an RBI single, while freshman Andy Roberts highlighted the frame with a two-run double.

Senior Spencer Brunson led MC with two hits and two RBI.  The Toppers were led by Wallis, who went 3-5 with five RBI in the contest.

The Choctaws will be back in action next weekend when they host Hardin-Simmons for a three-game series at Frierson Field.  The two teams will play a doubleheader on Friday at 3:00 p.m. and a single game on Saturday at noon.
