Jackets Drop Pair of Games on Diamond at Centre

More news about: Defiance

DANVILLE, Ky. – The Yellow Jackets managed only one run on six hits in Sunday's doubleheader at Centre College, falling 1-0 and 7-1 in non-conference action. Defiance was held scoreless through 13 innings, before denting the scoreboard in its final frame of the afternoon.

Junior right-hander Stephen Leskow sparkled on the mound for the Jackets in the opener, holding Centre to one run on five hits over six innings of work. The Defiance, Ohio native retired seven batters on strikes and walked only two in his second collegiate complete game performance.

A two-out rally in the bottom of the first proved to be the different in the pitcher's duel however, as Centre put three-straight batters on base and scraped across the eventual game-winning tally on a run-scoring single.

The Jackets ended with only two hits in the game that lasted just 94 minutes but had multiple chances thanks to seeing nine hitters reach safely. DC could not push a run home however, failing to take advantage of two runners in scoring position with only one out in the second and four-straight batters getting on base to open the sixth.

Centre (5-5) broke loose for four runs in the second inning of the nightcap and added insurance tallies in the fourth and sixth to secure a 7-1 victory and the doubleheader sweep.

Bryn Lehman provided the only RBI of the day for the Purple and Gold, scoring Dave Riley on a single after Riley had opened the top of the seventh with a double. Braden Brugler and Brad Kremer collected the other two hits for DC, while Alex Schomaeker turned in his second scoreless outing in as many days on the mound.

Defiance (1-3) will take a week off from game action, before heading to Fort Myers, Fla., to compete in the Gene Cusic Classic from March 12 through March 16. The seven-game trip will begin on March 12 at 3:00 pm with a doubleheader against New England.
