PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla.—Freshman third baseman Steve Kisan (North Royalton/Lakewood St. Edward) went 3-for-4 at the plate, tallied two runs batted-in and scored two more to lead the Heidelberg University baseball team to a 4-2 win over Moravian (Pa.) College today at the Snowbird Baseball Classic in Port Charlotte, Fla. The win ran the Berg's win streak to three.
Heidelberg (4-2) tied the game, 1-1, in the top of the fifth inning when freshman first baseman Steve Morse (Scottsdale, Ariz./St. Mary's) and Kisan led off with back-to-back doubles.
The Student Princes again tied the game, 2-2, in the seventh. Kisan belted a two-out triple before senior left fielder Ross Pruitt (Elletsville, Ind./Edgewood) single him home.
In the ninth, Kisan and sophomore shortstop Andrew Zenczak (Brunswick) teamed up for RBI singles to break the tie. Freshman Eric Monroe (Chagrin Falls/Kenston), pinch hitting for senior center fielder Lashon Long (Euclid), led off with a single. Freshman Trevor Oldham (Akron/Archbishop Hoban), pinch running for Monroe, advanced to second on a balk, then to third on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Austin Fleming (Clinton Township, Mich./De La Salle). Kisan drove in Oldham and moved to second on another Pruitt single, then tagged up to third. Zenczak moved Kisan across the plate for the insurance run.
Moravian threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases off senior right hander Daniel Brannum (Jamestown/Greenview), but Brannum retired the last two batters—including one of his two strikeouts—to earn his first save of the season.
Freshman righty Ryan Minteer (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) started on the mound and worked 5.2 innings, ceding two runs on five hits, while striking out three batters and issuing two walks. Junior righty Teddy Lowe (Fort Wayne, Ind./Carroll) (1-0) relieved Minteer and retired all seven batters he faced over 2.1 innings to earn the decision.
In addition to Kisan, Pruitt was 3-for-4 with an RBI.
The Berg returns to the diamond tomorrow for a 4 p.m. tilt with Denison University.
