Baruch Rallies From 12-0 Deficit to Defeat Muhlenberg in Major Comeback, 14-13

The Baruch baseball team overcame a 12-0 deficit by rallying to defeat Muhlenberg, 14-13, in what is considered the biggest comeback victory in team history.

The two teams were playing a Saturday morning game in Fort Myers, Florida at Terry Park, which is the former spring training facility of the Kansas City Royals.

Muhlenberg dominated early and scored five runs in their first at-bat on four hits. They scored seven more runs in the fourth inning and appeared to be on the way to an ugly rout.

However, the Bearcats never lost their composure and slowly climbed back into the game, starting in the bottom of the fourth inning as
Thommy DeJesushit a sacrifice fly RBI to score Thomas Daly for a 12-1 score.

The Bearcats went on to score six more runs in the fifth inning on five hits and two Muhlenberg errors.
Ricky Gerbinoand Yancy Taveraseach had an RBI single, while John Yuksekolsmacked an RBI double in the inning to enable the Bearcats to have a window of opportunity to get back into the game competitively with a 12-7 score.

Alvin Matahit an RBI single in the sixth and Aldo Altamiranoadded an RBI single in the seventh inning to cut the score to 12-9.

Muhlenberg added a home run for a 13-9 score in their top half of the eighth inning, but the Bearcats fought back again by scoring four more runs in their bottom half of the eighth.
Steve Hessionled off the inning with a single and Alvin Mata homered to cut the score to 13-11.

Thomas Daly then doubled and Yancy Taveras singled to get two more runners on base. Thommy DeJesus calmly stepped to the plate and smacked a hard single to score to both runs to dramatically tie the game at 13 to the astonishment of the Muhlenberg bench and spectators in attendance.

Paul Perez pitched a perfect ninth inning and that allowed the Bearcats with an opportunity in their final at-bat to try to clinch the victory.

Ricky Gerbino doubled to lead off and Alvin Mata walked to get two runners on base. Thomas Daly, the 2011 CUNYAC Player of the Year and Team Captain did what great players are expected to do as he smacked a single to score Gerbino with the winning run as the Baruch bench and coaching staff spilled on to the field in celebration of a major comeback.

Muhlenberg suffers only their second loss of the season in 11 games played. The Bearcats improve to 2-5 overall.

The baseball team will return to action tomorrow afternoon, Sunday, March 11, with a 3:00 pm single non-conference game against Salem State in Fort Myers.
