PANTHER BASEBALL RALLIES PAST NEW PALTZ IN DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP

OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com ) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury baseball team captured a non-conference sweep over the visiting New Paltz Hawks, 8-7 and 6-3, on Sunday afternoon at home from the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex. Old Westbury extended their win streak to five games, moving to 10-3 on the season while sending the Hawks to 3-4.

New Paltz jumped on Old Westbury starter Chris Sanabria early with a solo run in the first and three more in the second to take a 4-0 lead. Old Westbury answered with a single by Christopher DeGennaro to score John Angelino in the third to make it a 4-1 game. Five more Panthers crossed home plate in the third to put Old Westbury ahead 6-4. Anthony and Orsano and John Angelino garnered back-to-back bases loaded walks followed by consecutive run scoring singles from Brian Walsh and DeGennaro capped by Steve Mare's infield grounder that scored Angelino for Old Westbury's monster inning. New Paltz knotted the game at six-all when they added two runs off Sanabria on a pair of singles and errors in the fourth inning. Old Westbury reliever James Roubal inherited two of Sanabria's runners in the fourth and recorded three straight outs to escape out of the jam. Brian Walsh's single to score Brian Reutter reclaimed the lead for Old Westbury in the fourth. New Paltz tied the game in the seventh off a Mike Sherlock sacrifice fly to center field before Old Westbury claimed victory in the bottom of the frame. With the bases loaded, Blake Barbeito was hit by the pitch that sent pinch runner Jacob Coners home for the winning run.

Old Westbury received multiple hits and RBI from Brian Walsh (2-4) and Christopher DeGennaro (2-3) while Steve Mare hit 2-for-4 with an RBI. John Angelino registered pair of runs scored. Paul Valerio (1-3, R) extended his hit streak to 12 games while DeGennaro's upped his streak to eight. Paul Merola (2-4, RBI, R), Jake Cameron (2-4, 3B, 2-RBI) and Jimmy Briggs (2-4, 2B, R) tallied multiple hits for New Paltz while Mike Sherlock and Cameron drove in two and Matt Carr scored twice.

Stephen Chapter earned Old Westbury's win, improving to 2-2 on the season after logging one inning of work. James Roubal worked three innings in relief of Sanabria, giving up an unearned run on two hits and a walk while striking out two. Chris Pyz took the loss for New Paltz, surrendering two runs (one earned) off four hits and two walks in 4.1 innings.

Old Westbury outhit their opponent for the ninth time this season, holding a 9-8 edge over New Paltz. The Panthers were denied a stolen base for just the second time this season, going 0-for-3 on the base path while New Paltz stole three bases. Old Westbury also committed a season-high seven errors, compared to the Hawks' one.

In game two, Old Westbury broke a scoreless tie in the fourth when Anthony Orsano scored off a double play followed by a wild pitch that scored John Angelino for the Panthers' 2-0 lead. New Paltz answered in the third as Chris Paulicelli scored on an infield grounder. New Paltz tied the game at three-all in the sixth. Paulicelli reached on an error by third baseman Blake Barbeito, which allowed Jake Cameron to score followed by Mike Sherlock stroking the game tying single. Old Westbury replied in the bottom of the sixth to take hold of the game en route to their fifth straight win. Brian Walsh and Chris DeGennaro came around to score off an error by third baseman Matt Prescia. Barbeito then stepped to the plate and delivered a single down the right field line to score Steve Mare for the sixth and final run.

Anthony Orsano (1-3, R) and Benjamin Farias (1-3, R, RBI) registered the lone extra base hits to lead Old Westbury. Paul Valerio (13 games) and Christopher DeGenarro (9 games) both singled to extend their hit streaks. Blake Barbeito and Valerio swept Old Westbury's lone bags on the day. Mike Sherlock banged out three singles and drove in one run to pace New Paltz.

Ryan Bresnahan improved to 2-0 on the season with a six inning, six strikeout performance in which he allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits and three walks before Jonathan Costa shut the door with a one-two-three inning to record his s3econd save of the season. Chris Chismar went the distance and took the loss for New Paltz, served up four runs on six hits and four walks while fanning six batters.

Both teams had six hits apiece while Old Westbury's two doubles were the lone extra base hits on the game. Old Westbury held a 2-1 advantage in stolen bases while New Paltz committed three errors compared to the Panthers' two. Old Westbury finished with seven strikeouts and three walks.
