Generals Tame Mustangs, 12-2

More news about: Washington and Lee

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team scored nine runs in the first three innings and ran away with a 12-2 victory over Stevenson on Tuesday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.

The Generals (6-8) out-hit the Mustangs (10-7-1), 13-7, and senior Jody Davis (McLean, Va./Langley) threw 7.0 strong innings as W&L won for the third time in the last four games.

The Blue and White opened with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first as junior Alex Maragos (Chicago, Ill./Loyola) drove in classmate Jonathan Stutts (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) with a groundout for the game's first run. The next batter, junior Alex Mait (Chesterfield, Va./Clover Hill), made it a 2-0 W&L advantage with an RBI single to center field.

Stevenson halved its deficit in the top of the second when sophomore Scott Merkel (Hampstead, Md./Calvert Hall) singled, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and then scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Thomas Goulian (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) to make it a 2-1 game.

First-year Nick Biumi (Cumming, Ga./Lambert) made it a 4-1 lead for the Generals in the second inning when he hit a triple to left center that scored seniors C.J. Thompson (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease) and Mike Decembrino (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury).

Washington and Lee sealed the game with five runs in the third inning as junior Luke Deary (Carlisle, Mass./Groton School) hit a three-run home run to left to make it 7-1 in favor of W&L. Stutts then hit his second round tripper of the season, a two-run shot to left-center, that put the Generals up 9-1.

W&L tacked on three more runs in the sixth and Stevenson added a run in the top of the ninth to complete the scoring.

The 12 runs scored were the second-most in a game for the Generals this season, though Davis hardly needed the help. He improved to 2-2 on the season, allowing a single run on six hits and two walks with a strikeout in 7.0 innings.

Sophomore Joe Walinksi (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) started and took the loss for the Mustangs. He gave up four runs on five hits in just 2.0 innings.

Nine different Generals recorded at least on base hit, led by junior Will Salley (Augusta, Ga./Westside), who was 3-for-5 with two doubles and a pair of runs scored. Stutts finished 2-for-4 with the homer, two RBIs and two runs scored, Decembrino was 2-for-3 with and RBI and two runs scored and senior Alston James (Columbia, S.C./Hammond) was 1-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs.

Merkel and Goulian each finished 2-for-3 at the plate for Stevenson. Merkel added one run scored and Goulian drove in both of the Mustang's runs.

The Generals return to action tomorrow (Wednesday), when they host Mary Washington at 3:00 pm.
