#2 Kean Tops St. Joseph's-L.I., 9-3

Union, N.J. (3/14/12) – The #2/3 Kean University baseball team pounded out nine runs on 12 hits as they defeated visiting St. Joseph's College-Long Island, 9-3, Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action.

The Cougars improve to 9-2 overall while the Golden Eagles fall to 3-8 this season.

Kean used a balanced scoring attack as 18 different Cougars saw action in today's matchup.  The Cougars plated three runs in their first at-bat as senior Steve Sanguiliano got things going with a two-out double.  He would move to third off a Golden Eagle miscue and scored after a passed ball.  Senior Dylan Laguna brought in the second run with a ground-rule double later in the inning and would score after stealing home, putting Kean ahead 3-0 after the first.

Leading 4-0 in the fourth, St. Joseph's broke through with a single run as Thomas Rubenstein recorded a two-out RBI single.  Kean would go on to score two more in the fourth and fifth and pushed the lead to 9-1 in the sixth as Sanguiliano started off the frame with a single up the middle.  After swiping second, sophomore Joe O'Connor drove him in with an RBI double.

Starter Mike Russo picked up the win in a predetermined rotation.  Russo (2-1) allowed one run and two hits in four innings of work.  Senior Ryan Zamorsky worked two shutout innings while rookies Dan Hansen, Charles Thielmann and Yair Lopez combined for three innings of work allowing just two hits and no earned runs.  Starter Joe Polite suffered the loss for St. Joseph's.  Polite (0-2) allowed six runs and six hits in four innings.

Offensively Sanguiliano, Laguna and sophomore Nick Zucchero all finished with two hits, two runs scored and a double apiece while sophomore Shane Alvarez registered two RBI.  For the Golden Eagles, Anthony Delury and Rubenstein each recorded 2-for-3 days.

Kean heads to the West Coast and will take on the University of Redlands on Friday at 11 a.m. (PDT)
