AUBURNDALE, FL (March 16, 2012) – Behind seven shutout innings from starting pitcher Scott Allen, the Vassar College baseball team cruised to its first victory of the season, 9-0 over Westfield State University Friday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Park.

The Brewers (1-5) have a week off before commencing Liberty League play with a four-game series against St. Lawrence University on March 24. The first game will begin at 1:00 p.m. at Prentiss field; the two teams will play a pair of double headers over the weekend.

Vassar held the Owls scoreless, despite fielding an inexperienced defensive lineup behind Allen. All three Vassar outfielders started for the first time at their respective positions. Senior Liam Leeappeared at first base for the first time in two years, while Kyle Casey and Jason Garfinkel each made just their second collegiate appearance at third base and shortstop respectively.

Offensively, the Brewers did most of their damage in the sixth inning; leading 3-0 entering the inning, Vassar plated six runs on four hits. Left fielder Dan McCormack started the rally with a single in the hole between third and short and advanced to second when center fielder Sean Morash singled to right-center field. Right fielder Race Bottini moved both runners up with a sacrifice bunt before Lee delivered McCormack with a single to right. After Lee stole second, Casey hit a hard ground ball right to Owls' first baseman Josh Blair. When Blair turned to touch first, Morash broke for the plate, sliding in ahead of the throw to give Vassar a 5-0 lead, while Lee advanced to third. With second baseman Dave Robbins batting, Lee scored on a wild pitch, putting Vassar up 6-0.

With nobody on base and two outs, Vassar produced three more runs in the inning off of reliever Curt Everett. Robbins drew a walk, moving to third on a single up the middle by Garfinkel. After Allen walked, catcher A.J. Kim delivered the fourth run of the inning when he was hit by the pitch. McCormack continued the rally, walking to bring in the fifth run of the inning; Morash struck out swinging, but advanced to first on a passed ball, with Allen scoring the ninth run of the game. The Brewers sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning.

The Vassar bats were hot from the get go, as the team scored two runs in the first inning. Lee led off the game with a walk and advanced to second when Casey reached on an error. Both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch, then scored on successive ground outs.

Lee led the Vassar attack going 3-4 with a walk, scoring three runs and knocking in one.

Senior Dennis Tario closed the door for the Brewers facing seven batters in two innings of work without allowing a hit.
