Baldwin-Wallace Baseball Team Sweeps La Roche In Non-Conference Doubleheader

PITTSBURGH, PA. -- The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team swept La Roche (Pa.) College in a non-conference doubleheader today (Saturday, March 17) by scores of 9-6 and 11-4 at La Roche. B-W has now won six games in a row. 

With the two wins, the Yellow Jackets improve to 11-2 overall. La Roche falls to 3-11. 

In the first game, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a six-run advantage in the top of the third inning. The Redhawks then answered with one in the bottom of that inning. La Roche then scored one in the fourth and two in the fifth to close the Yellow Jacket lead to, 6-4. B-W then answered back in the sixth scoring one to extend the lead to 7-4. The Redhawks followed by scoring two in the eighth to close the gap to 7-6 heading into the final frame. B-W extended its lead with two in the top of the ninth to close out the scoring.

At the plate, the Yellow Jackets were led by senior Anthony Longhitano (Cuyahoga Falls), juniors Brendan Toughey (East Amherst, N.Y./ St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute)
and Jay Yost (Bascom /Hopwell-Loudon) and freshman Kyle Chontos (Pickerington/North). Toughey was two-for-three with one double, two runs-batted-in, got hit by a pitch and scored a run. Yost was two-for-four with one RBI and scored a run. Longhitano was two-for-five with a stolen base and scoring one run. Chontos was two-for-five with one RBI and two runs scored.

On the mound, senior Josh Scott (Strongsville) earned the win and pitched the first five innings. He allowed four runs (four earned) on four hits while striking out two. He was followed by sophomore Cory Waite (Willoughby/South) who pitched two scoreless innings while surrendering just two hits. Senior Bill Bostelman (Marion/ Harding) pitched one-third of inning allowing two runs (both earned). Relieving him was junior closer Jon Tenley (Wadsworth) pitching the final one and two-thirds innings and didn't allow a run.
 
Tenley recorded his second save of the season and the sixth of his career, which puts him one save shy of Andy Robinson's '93 record of seven.

In the second game, the Redhawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. B-W then scored four runs in the fifth, and two in the sixth, while La Roche scored one in the bottom each of those innings making the score, 6-3 after six innings of play. The Yellow Jackets then added six in the top of the eighth to extend their lead to 11-3. The Redhawks tacked on one in the bottom of the ninth to make the outcome closer.

At the plate, the Yellow Jackets were led by freshman outfielders Ethan Briggs (Sarasota, Fla./ Riverview) and Zach Ferster (Olmsted Falls), Yost and senior catcher Ryan Nordquist (Alliance). Briggs went three-for-five with three RBI and one run scored. Ferster was two-for-three with two runs scored. Yost was two-for-four with one double and two runs scored and Nordquist was two-for-four as well with two runs scored and two RBI.  

On the mound, sophomore Jon Capadona (North Royalton) started and pitched six strong innings, allowing just three runs (three earned). He struck out eight batters while not walking a batter. Waite came in for two scoreless innings of relief work without walking a batter. Sophomore Dylan Fodor (Twinsburg) pitched the final frame allowing just one run (earned).

B-W returns to action tomorrow when it plays the University of Pitt-Bradford (Pa.) in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. B-W's first home game is on April 4 against nonleague and cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University at Heritage Field in Berea at 4:00 p.m.
