28 Runs Are Most in Single Game by Shoremen in 89 Years;

Shoremen 12-1 for First Time Since 1938

WINTER HAVEN, FL -- The Washington College baseball team continue to make history today, defeating Curry College, 28-1, in seven innings in the Shoremen's final game at the RussMatt Baseball Central Florida Invitational today in Winter Haven. The 28 runs are the most the Shoremen have scored in a single game since a 33-1 win victory over Saint Joseph's (PA) in 1923. Washington improved to 12-1 for the first time since 1938 with its 11th win in a row, matching its longest winning streak since 1937. 

The Shoremen scored twice in the first inning when sophomore right fielder Ian Remington (Guilford, CT/Guilford) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring junior center fielder Sean Connole (Mt. Airy, MD/St. John's Catholic)and sophomore second baseman Jon Mahaffey (Sykesville, MD/Century)scored on a wild pitch. A sacrifice fly by Connole in the top of the second inning increased the lead to 3-0. Curry got a run back in the bottom of the second on an RBI double by Brandon Lewis. In the third inning, the Shoremen plated their fourth run on an RBI double by freshman first baseman Dennis Thomas(Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Curley).

Washington broke the game open with nine runs in the fourth inning.  Connole started the scoring off with a two-run double, freshman designated hitter Matt Christopher (Kennett Square, PA/Unionville) walked with the bases loaded, Remington hit an RBI single with the bases loaded, Thomas scored on an error, junior third baseman Daniel Wu (Kowloon, Hong Kong/International Secondary School) hit a three-run double, and Connole hit an RBI triple.

The scoring continued in the fifth inning as senior Dwight Wilcox (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's) hit an RBI single, Thomas scored on an error, and freshman left fielder Scott Matthews (Goshen, NY/Don Bosco Prep [NJ]) hit a three-run home run for his first collegiate round-tripper to ballon the lead to 18-1. Thomas hit his first collegiate home run to lead off the sixth to make it 19-1. 

Washington scored nine more runs In the seventh, Connole hit an RBI single, sophomore Nick Marinelli (Ellicott City, MD/Marriotts Rige) hit an RBI single, sophomore Tom Fiala (New Hope, PA/New Hope-Solebury) hit a two-run double, freshman Joe DiPaola (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) hit an RBI single, senior catcher John Rolewicz (Bear, DE/Salesianum School) hit a two-run double, freshman Michael Festa (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North) hit an RBI single, and Rolewicz scored on a fielder's choice. 

Eighteen of the 19 Shoremen to record a plate appearance or enter the game as a pinch runner in the contest scored at least one run. Connole, the only Shoreman to play the entire game, went 5-for-5 with a double, a triple, five RBI, three runs scored, two stolen bases, and a sacrifice fly. Wu was 3-for-3 with two doubles, three RBI, and three runs scored, while Festa went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Thomas went 2-for-3 with three walks, his home run, two RBI, and three runs scored, while Rolewciz was 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBI, and two runs scored. Marinelli added a 2-for-5 performance with a triple, two RBI, and two runs scored and Matthews finished with four RBI and two runs scored to go along with his home run.

Junior Kyle Aldrich (Warren, NJ/Watchung Hills Regional) got the win, allowing one run on two hits and three walks in four innings. Senior Steve Cameron (Laurel, MD/Reservoir) allowed one hit in one inning, sophomore Tim Perrotta (Roseland, NJ/West Essex Regional) allowed one hit and one walk in one inning, and senior Hunter Draheim (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) allowed no hits and no walks in one inning of work.

The Shoremen last won 11 straight games during the 1996 season. The Shoremen won 12 games in a row to open the 1937 season and went a perfect 12-0 during the 1897 campaign. Washington has now scored at least 20 runs in a game twice this season, making the first time the Shoremen have accomplished that feat in 11 years. The Shoremen swept a double-header from Lincoln, 27-3, and 24-5, on March 19th, 2001. 

The Shoremen return to action Tuesday with a 3:00 p.m. game at St. Mary's (MD).
