9th-Inning Heroics Lifts Generals to DH Sweep of Guilford

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team received a pair of walk-off base hits in recording a doubleheader sweep over Guilford College on Saturday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.

W&L (10-8, 4-2 ODAC) used a run-scoring double in the bottom of the ninth by junior Luke Deary (Carlisle, Mass./Groton School) to pull out a 2-1 win in the opener. In the nightcap, it was junior Jonathan Stutts' (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) single to right center with two outs in the bottom of the ninth that lifted the Generals to a 4-3 win over Guilford (12-10, 2-4).

Deary's double in game one made a winner of senior Pat Smith (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge), who kept the Guilford offense in check all afternoon. The lefty allowed just one run (0 ER) on four hits and two walks with six strikeouts in tossing his first-career complete game.

The Quakers' only run off of Smith came in the fourth inning as first-year Justin Pittman (Trinity, N.C./Trinity) drove in junior D.J. Phillips (Monroe, N.C./Parkwood), who had reached on an error, for an early 1-0 lead.

W&L tied the contest at 1-1 in the eighth inning when Stutts drove in senior Mike Decembrino (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) with  a base hit.

In the ninth, senior C.J. Thompson (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease) reached on an error with one out and moved up to second when senior Alston James (Columbia, S.C./Hammond) was hit by a pitch. Deary, the next batter, then laced a double that allowed Thompson to score the winning run from second base.

First-year Ryan Lindsay (Davie, Fla./Western) took the loss, surrendering two runs (1 ER) on two hits and a walk in 1.1 innings of relief. Junior Will James (Greensboro, N.C./D.H. Conley) started for GC, earning a no decision after keeping W&L off the scoreboard for seven innings. He gave up just five hits and two walks.

Stutts finished 3-for-4 for W&L with a triple and an RBI. Deary was 1-for-4 with the game-winning RBI and junior Alex Mait (Chesterfield, Va./Clover Hill) was 1-for-2 with a walk.

Phillips had one hit in four at-bats for Guilford, scoring the lone Quaker run. Pittman finished 1-for-4 as well.

In game two, Stutts' game-ending hit highlighted the Generals' fifth win of the season when trailing after six innings.

After the Blue and White took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on a Mait RBI single that scored junior Will Salley (Augusta, Ga./Westside), Guilford tallied two runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth to go up 3-1.

Sophomore Will Byrd (Raleigh, N.C./St. David's) hit a sacrifice fly to right for the Quakers' first run in the fifth. Sophomore Ben Anderson (Kernersville, N.C./East Forsyth) made it 2-1 in favor of the visitors with an RBI single that scored Pittman.

GC extended its lead to 3-1 on an RBI double by junior Kent Peterson (Albermarle, N.C./Nation Ford) with two outs in the sixth that scored Pittman.

The Generals tied the contest at 3-3 in the seventh as James and Decembrino each connected for RBI base hits.

In the ninth, sophomore Keegan Dolan (Bethesda, Md./Landon) walked with one out, but was then picked off second base for the second out. Decembrino followed with a walk, stole second and moved up to third on a wild pitch. Stutts then lined a single to right center to score Decembrino with the game-winning run.

Sophomore Jake Rudolph (Cordova, Tenn./Memphis University School) earned the win, getting the final two outs of the ninth inning. Junior Ian Shaw (Atlanta, Ga./Riverwood) started for W&L, tossing 7.1 innings. He allowed three runs on seven hits with two strikeouts.

Junior Micah Winterstein (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) took the loss, surrendering one run on one hit and three walks with a strikeout in 2.1 innings of relief. Sophomore Borja Jones-Berasaluce started for GC. He allowed three runs on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts in 6.0 innings.

Mait finished a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate for the Generals with one run driven in. Stutts was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base. Decembrino added one hit in three at-bats with a run, an RBI and a stolen base.

Anderson finished 2-for-3 with an RBI for Guilford and senior Zack Montalbano (Osprey, Fla./Venice) was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

The Generals return to action on Sunday then they host Tufts at 1:00 pm.
