Home runs fuel Tommie baseball victory

Nick Reichert's two-run homer in the last of the seventh inning broke a 5-5 tie and helped No. 23-ranked St. Thomas post an 8-5 win over Benedictine (Ill.) in Monday's spring-trip baseball game in Florida.

Charles Bruchu hit a three-run homer in the second inning as part of a three-hit day. Reichert also had three hits, including an RBI hit in the first inning, to lead UST's 12-hit attack.

UST (9-3), which rallied from a 5-4 deficit, tied the game in the sixth inning on an error, bunt and Sam Miller's RBI single. The Tommies added an insurance run in the eighth inning as Bruchu doubled and Tim Kuzniar stroked an RBI single.

Zach Franz started and allowed four earned runs in five-plus innings, with five strikeouts and no walks. Tommy Danczyk took the win in 1.2 innings of relief. Josh Kubitschek worked the ninth inning and allowed two hits but recorded three strikeouts and notched the save.

St. Thomas, which has won five of its last six games, plays Tuesday afternoon against Ramapo (N.J.).

In 89 innings this season, Tommie pitchers have 89 strikeouts and just 13 walks and have lowered their team ERA to 2.53.
