Schwenn breaks personal win record; Pitches complete game to down Redlands 5-3

More news about: Whittier

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Senior Ryan Schwenn ended his week in impressive fashion and continues to impress on the mound as he pitched a complete game earning himself his fifth win of the season to beat Redlands 5-3.

Whittier now improves to 12-11, 6-7 SCIAC, while Redlands drops to 11-11, 5-8 SCIAC.

Schwenn again adds to his impressive senior year as he gains his fifth win of 2012 breaking his career best in wins as he pitched nine innings giving up three runs on six hits to go with three strikeouts.

Last week he helped Whittier earn wins over No. 12 Ithaca and No. 4 Kean and followed those performances up with SCIAC Athlete of the Week Honors this week voted on by the Sports Information Directors of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Whittier got on the scoreboard first behind back to back to back singles from Phil Acosta, Andrew Vallejo, and Corey Jensen and then added two more in the third inning to take a 3-1 lead after a Vallejo single drove in Alex Mitchell, while Nick Amicone drove in Jensen with a double down the left field line.

But the Poet offense didn't stop there as they tacked on two more in fifth to take a demanding 5-1 lead after Jensen doubled to right center that drove in Acosta followed by an RBI triple from Amicone.

Schwenn continued to silence the Bulldog bats as he shut them out over five innings but gave up runs in the seventh and eighth behind a homerun and a groundout to short.  But he buckled down and closed the door on them in the ninth cutting their rally short grabbing his fifth win of the season and remaining tied atop the SCIAC standings in wins.

The Poets were led on offense by Jensen who finished 3-4 with two runs and two RBI's, while Amicone and Vallejo each finished 2-4.

The Purple & Gold look to sweep the Bulldogs of the University of Redlands as they take part in a doubleheader tomorrow, March 24 with times slated for 11:00am and 2:30pm.
