OLD WESTBURY, NY (March 28, 2012) -- The Vassar College baseball team took an early 4-0 lead and weathered three one-run innings en route to a 5-3 win over SUNY Old Westbury on Wednesday night at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.

Vassar starter Dennis Tario pitched two scoreless innings to earn the win as the Brewers staffed out their pitching duties. Freshman Jason Garfinkel delivered a two-RBI double to put Vassar ahead 2-0 in the top of the first inning.

The Brewers (3-8, 1-3 Liberty) dip into Liberty League play this weekend against Skidmore with a home doubleheader on Saturday, March 31, at 12:00 p.m. and a road doubleheader on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. The Panthers (16-6, 5-1 Skyline) ended an eight-game winning streak and next play Farmingdale State in a road doubleheader on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.

In the bottom of the ninth with a 5-2 lead, Zander Mrlik entered the game in a save situation and put two runners on with a hit batter and a walk. Mrlik forced a chopper up the middle and Garfinkel converted the 6-3 double play to ease the pressure. Old Westbury cut the lead to 5-3 with a two-out RBI-double by Paul Valerio but Mrlik picked up the save with a groundout to first by the next batter.

Vassar scored single runs in three innings. In the second inning, Dave Robbins led off with a double, advanced to third on a single by Sean Morash, and scored on a wild pitch for a 3-0 lead. Morash singled through the left side to drive in Scott Allen from second for a 4-0 lead in the fourth.

The Brewers protected the lead with solid outings by six pitchers, three of which threw at least one scoreless inning. Max Frankel followed Tario with two innings of scoreless work, allowing three hits. Seven Brewers hit safely and all nine starters reached base, led by Morash's 2-for-3 output with one RBI.
