Wabash Outlasts Anderson

More news about: Wabash

Wabash picked up three runs in the late innings to defeat Anderson University 13-11. The Ravens' bats were silenced over the final four innings by Little Giant pitchers Ross Hendrickson and Luke Zinsmaster, while eight of the nine Wabash batters collected at least two hits.

Wabash finished the game with 20 total hits, while Anderson belted 13 in the contest.

Chris Deig, John Holm, and Andrew Rodgers each collected three hits. Holm blasted his eighth home run of the season, tying him with James Campbell of Pomona-Pitzer and John Macon Smith of Guilford for the Division III lead.

Wabash trailed 4-0 after the first inning, but picked up four in the second off an RBI single by Tyler Owensby, a run-scoring triple by Tyler Hampton, an RBI single by Robby Hechinger, and an RBI single by Deig. Anderson took a one-run lead in the third, but John Pennington scored on a single and error off a hit by Hampton. Hechinger drove home another run one of his two doubles of the game to put the Little Giants up 6-5.

A grand slam by Anderson's Michael Tucker in the fourth — one of two home runs in the game for the senior — gave the Ravens the lead once again. Holm answered with a two-run shot in the bottom of the inning after Tanner Watson led off with a walk. The Ravens scored twice more in the fifth, but again the Little Giants rallied with a Holm single, followed by an RBI triple by Montana Timmons. Timmons came home on a single by Rodgers to cut the Anderson lead to 11-10.

Deig started a two-out rally in the seventh inning with a single up the middle, then moved to second on a balk. Watson then drilled a single to right, scoring Deig and tying the game at 11-11.

A two-run single by Rodgers — his second and third RBI of the game — produced the victory after Timmons led off eighth by being hit by a pitch and Pennington laid down a perfect bunt for a base hit.

While the Little Giants were rallying, Hendrickson and Zinsmaster took control of the game on the mound.

Hendrickson worked the sixth and seventh innings, allowing one walk, a single, and one hit batsman with one strikeout. After the first batter he faced reached on an error, Hendrickson got a ground ball to short that turned into a double play to help quell any Anderson scoring threat. Zinsmaster came on in the eighth, retiring all six batters he faced to earn his second victory of the season.

Eric Foust started for Wabash, working 3-1/3 innings with nine hits and nine runs along with three walks and one strikeout. He also hit two batters. Luke Holm pitched 1-2/3 innings, allowing two runs on three hits with two strikeouts and one hit batsman.

Tyler Watson (1-1) took the loss for Anderson (9-7). Tucker finished the game 4-for-4 from the plate with six RBI.

Wabash (12-10) returns to action in the North Coast Athletic Conference West Division this weekend with a four-game series at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio.
