Saints Sweep PAC Doubleheader With Grove City

(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) - The Thomas More College baseball team swept Grove City College in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader today (Saturday, March 31, 2012) at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.  The Saints won game one, 4-2, and the nightcap, 6-4.

With the sweep, the Saints improve to 13-6 overall and 5-3 in the PAC, while the Wolverines fall to 4-16 overall and 2-6 in the PAC.

In game one, the Saints scored one in the third, one in the fourth and two in the fifth and held Grove City to one run in the sixth for the 4-2 victory.

Sophomore pitcher Andy Roenker (Taylor Mill, Ky./Holy Cross) earned the win on the mound as he pitched six innings and gave up two runs (both earned) on five hits and struck out one.  Junior pitcher David Etscheid (Union, Ky./Ryle) pitched one inning of relief  to earn the save as he allowed one hit and struck out two.

The Saints were led at the plate by junior shortstop David Kennett (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City) was two-for-three with a run scored.

In game two, the Saints scored two in the first, one in the third and three in the fourth, while holding the Wolverines to two in the second and two in the seventh for the 6-4 victory.

Sophomore second baseman Jason Handley (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) led the Saints' offense as he was two-for-three with two runs batted-in and a run scored.

On the mound, junior Mike Hager (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) earned the win as he started and pitched four innings giving up two runs (both earned) on six hits and striking out one.  Etscheid earned the save as he pitched three innings of relief and gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits and striking out one.

The Saints return to the diamond on Tuesday (April 3) when they travel to Bethany, West Virginia to play Bethany College in a single nine-inning game.  First pitched is set for 3 p.m.
