Blue Devis split with 11th ranked Pointers

MENOMONIE (March 31, 2012) - After getting bounced 10-6, UW-Stout came back to down 11th ranked UW-Stevens Point, 5-3, Saturday in the home and conference opener at Nelson Field.

In the opener, Jon Schoch's (Sr, Chippewa Falls) first inning two-run home run was erased by a five-run second inning by the Pointers  Stout pulled to within a run in the bottom of the second on RBIs by Santiago Morales (Jr, West St. Paul, Minn) and Ryan Gangestad (Fr, Maple Grove, Minn).

The Pointers added a single run in the fifth on a Sean Gerber sacrifice fly, then added three runs in the seventh. Stout plated a pair of runs in the seventh on singles by Ben Yaucher (Jr, Janesville) and Schoch. The Pointers added a single run in the eighth.

The Pointers (8-4, 1-1 WIAC) rapped out 17 hits, while Stout (8-4, 1-1) collected 11 hits.

In the second game, Jake Duske's (Sr, Montrose, Minn) fielders' choice plated Brett Vavra (Fr, Chippewa Falls) for Stout's second run to break a 1-1 tie in the fifth, Morales singled in Duske from second and Morales scored from second on a passed ball and an errant throw for Stout's eventual winning run.

The Pointers scored twice in the sixth, a solo home run by Sean Gerber and a bases loaded fielder's choice by Riley Spetz pushed in a run. Stout's Vavra drove in a run in the sixth. Vavra finished the game hitting 2-for-3.  The Pointers' Dan Douglas was 2-for-5.

Tyler Hamann (Jr, Marathon) picked up the win, going seven innings, striking out two.

Stout's last win over Stevens Point came on May 9, 2010, in Menomonie, also by a 5-3 margin.

The teams meet again Sunday, April 1 at noon.
